Week 5 - Futures F2 (15K) - Bucaramanga, COL - Dee makes it 50/50!

I mean, of course it could be the real Adam *bow* but then surely he'd think of himself as the bagel king, because Rob Dee doesn't have a patch on him in that department.

I've been trying hard to think of anything good which can be said about a group of people who deliberately set out to mock and humiliate fellow humans who've done them no harm.

Did you use to torture small animals when you were children?

it's not mocking or humiliating. We all have a great affection and admiration for Dee, Lownsbourgh and anyone else who keep on going for their dream even though the odds are against them. it's good-natured teasing.

In mode of serious reply.... no personal harm of course, and I bear Mr Dee no animosity.

But in the purchasing of WC fiasco, they bought much of this on themselves. WCs should go to talented local players who need a foot up, not to someone with a 0/50 record (or even 50/50 depending on how you see it!)

And the dream should go on!

whilst I agree with you happycynic i think most of the blame should go to those selling the WCs, as you say they should be going to local players and if you're silly enough to sell a WC you can't blame someone for being willing to buy it. Though it's all swings, roundabouts, and vicious circles and more complicated (and dizzying) than either of us have said.

Cry us a river...  I presume that you are detached from modern society and the contempary press as you would see far worse by simply picking up a copy of The Sun.  Websites like this are set up by followers and supporters who want to see British tennis improve and grow and if you browse through the content on this board you will see that we have supported players through thick and thin.  Surely however you can accept that this isn't just a player having a bad couple of tournament and that Robert Dee is actually a rather large embarassment.  However we have taken his situation lightly on the board and have supported him through a comical outlook; what do you expect, should we be giving Dee's tennis abilities the same amount of respect as Murray's?

As i recommended earlier, watch a documentary on the television or just read a newspaper.. I guarantee you will be shocked with what you will see.  And then come back and apologise. smile

I think of it this way. You're Robert or Adam, you dream of playing on the tennis circuit (and perhaps becoming a famous tennis player) and by some lucky chance, you have the means to do so. You go to lots of events, unfortunately you're not really good enough and you get thrashed every time, but hopefully you have a lot of fun.

Remembering that you used to dream of becoming a famous tennis player, what would you prefer - being completely ignored, or to have everyone checking for your results and turning you into one of the three most famous and talked about GB players outside the top 1000 (I'm thinking Adam, Robert and Amadeus here), not to mention having people miss you (talking Adam here - btw, apparently, while he may not have the physique to be a good player, he's a pretty decent coach) when you retire?

Like Bethan, I don't blame Robert or Adam for getting paid WCs (assuming they were paid), I blame the prople who gave them out and the old scoring system that made them worth having.

Would I have done the same in their position at the same age? Quite possibly. Am I ever so slightly envous that they get to travel the tennis circuit and play in pro-level tournaments - definitely! Will I be celebrating when Dee finally wins a set (not impossible - he's only been double-bagelled once, and if he has managed 5 games in a set, why couldn't that end up being 6 if he opponent was weak enough?) - definitely, though I must admit I hope he gets the record first! wink

Finally, what do you think Eddie the Eagle (The ski-jumping equivalent of these two) would have preferred - the press making some good-natured fun of him and raising his profile so high or to have been completely ignored by everyone in silent embarrassment? I'm pretty sure he preferred the former! biggrin

Steven, you put that quite beautifully; I share your view absolutely. Let's not mock Rob, Mozart or Amadeus - I'd love to have been good enough to take an occasional game off professional players! Let's continue to support them in their dreams.
