"Tennis is for wimps...."

I have to laugh, but that is what my brother-in-law told me at Thanksgiving when we were talking about Marcus' tennis.  My nephew is 14 and plays American Football for his Middle School.  He hopes to play High School Football one day.

Marcus does not have the size or the attitude for American Football.  He does not like a great deal of contact, maybe that is why he loves tennis.

I was thinking about my brother-in-law's opinion tonight after Marcus' team tennis.  Each week in team tennis Marcus plays a set of doubles and a set of singles with different partners against different players etc.  Tonight Marcus' lost his doubles match 6-3 inspite of playing the best on the court (I am his father so I might be biased).  Then he lost 6-2 in singles against a player he has never dropped a set against in the past (the kid is also a couple of years older than Marcus).  As we walked to the car Marcus was talking about selling his racket.  As we drove home he was talking about how he hated tennis.  As I put him to bed he was confident that if the singles was best of three sets he would have won the match.

Tennis is for wimps?  I admire boxers, tennis players in fact any sport where you are out there alone, those are the athletes I admire the most.  Marcus learns so many lessons of life on the tennis court and I will always be grateful for the sport.

Thanks for listening.  I don't post that much here, been busy, but it is always cool to sound off to you guys.

mentally tennis must be one of the toughest sports there is (at a pro level of course) but for your average person they just dont realise this and as its no contact and played normally ina good spirit (shaking hands at the end, even with the umpire. could you see that happening in football? not in a million years) it is seen as wimpy. also the fact that it is a recreational sport for the large majoirty adds to this viewpoint.

when i played school sports at the end of the game the home team formed a line and clapped the oppositon off, would maybe be nicer if this happened more at pro level, sport is a game after all.

i hope marcus keeps it up. are there any youtube vids of him in action yet?

Ditto what Mad says Doug.....

I heard a tennis commentator saying that he would not be surprised if Nadal retires in 3 or 4 years time....whats that 26 or 27....because they way he plays and the way tennis is going generally....so physical....!

Also actually had an advert on TV for holidays to Montana...looks a special kind of place !

Montana is amazing Drew.

There are few tournys in the winter months here. Only the largest towns here have indoor tennis courts. Marcus hit with a girl who plays no tennis for six months as there are no indoor courts anywhere near by (she lives in the NE of the State).

Marcus will play next in Billings at the end of Feb. I think he will play singles in the 10s & 12s. There four courts in Billings and so we might have a ton of waiting around etc, but that is fine.

Whilst I absolutely do not agree that tennis is for wimps, I think there is something to be said for team sports (I'm not convinced about football, but others - rugby, hockey and so on) it's a different discipline sure but the ability to work together as a single unit of 11 (or however many) isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Great to hear from you again Doug, and glad to hear Marcus is still enjoying himself, I hope you continue to keep us posted about his progress and tournaments. And I hope you let him know that he has supporters half way across the world rooting for him when he wants to chuck it all in smile.gif
