All Brits have Non-Brits in the next round by the look of it:

Skupski vs Norfelt

(hardly a reward for beating the number 1 seed given Norfeldt's performances in the last 2 weeks)

Tillingworth vs. Somogyi/Colangelo

Smethurst vs. Klier (4)

Bamford vs. Brit Basher Charrion (5)

Thornely vs. Kretschmer(3)/Mankad

Coupland vs. Flock (2)/Pellerin

On rankings we should have 1 (Skupski) through to the quarter finals.

Given that 4 Brits are playing the top 4 seeds (or their conquerers) in the last 16, we can't really hope for another.

So my conclusion is if it does all go pair shaped tomorrow, there's no point in going Brit bashing.

But if we have even 1 winner let's CELEBRATE!!!!

Come on the Brits!!!!

clap.gif Great results from Thornley and Skupski. I hadn't despaired of Ken but I didn't expect a straight sets win biggrin.gif

Hopefully all the Brits can beat the odds in rd2 but like you say malteaser, even one winner will be worth celebrating.

Winners & scores only because I can't be bothered to type out the names of the losers:

Kunnap/Norfeldt 7-6(3) 6-3

Evans/Rushby 4 & 2  smile

Bergman/Kumlin 3 & 5

Brewer/Flan 7-5 3-6 [10-8]  smile

Eaton/Skupski 7-6(3) 6-1  smile  cry

Klier/Schöck 2 & 3  cry

Not a bad first round haul, all things considered! clap.gif

A day like that deserves a full rundown with comparative rankings, I think: biggrin

L32: Ken Skupski WR 705 beat (1) Nicolas Tourte (FRA) WR 430 by 6-4 7-6(4) biggrin
L32: (Q) Matthew Illingworth WR 1180 beat (7) Andre Wiesler (GER) WR 639 by 4 & 1 biggrin
L32: (WC) Dan Smethurst WR 1488 beat (WC) Thomas Knights UNR by 6-2 6-4 smilecry
L32: Ian Flanagan  WR 889 lost to (Q) Simon Cauvard (FRA) WR 1488 by 7-6(2) 7-6(3) ashamed
L32: (WC) Daniel Evans WR 1260 lost to (5) Olivier Charroin (FRA) WR 611 by 3-6 6-1 6-0 cry
L32: Neil Bamford  WR 838 beat Leonel Alberti (ARG) WR 837 by 3 & 2 biggrin
L32: (Q) Sean Thornley WR 1276 beat (Q) Clement Reix (FRA) WR 1049 by 7-6(4) 6-3 biggrin
L32: (WC) George Coupland UNR beat Mait Kunnap (EST) WR 745 by 6-3 3-6 7-5 biggrin

Looking at the R2 draw, apart from the top quarter, where hopefully we now have chances with both the seeds out, I doubt we're going to have much to celebrate tomorrow, but that won't stop it from being a good tournament! smile

L16: Ken Skupski WR 705 v (Q) Henrik Norfeldt (SWE) WR 955
L16: (Q) Matthew Illingworth WR 1180 v Fabio Colangelo (ITA) WR 759
L16: (WC) Dan Smethurst WR 1488 v (4) David Klier (GER) WR 618
L16: Neil Bamford  WR 838 v (5) Olivier Charroin (FRA) WR 611
L16: (Q) Sean Thornley WR 1276 v (Q) Harsh Mankad (IND) UNR
L16: (WC) George Coupland UNR v (2) Alexander Flock (GER) WR 417

Is that Coup's first ranking point then? Well done to him if so.

And surely Harsh Mankad isn't really UNR? His name has been all over these UK tournaments for years.

Suprising but it is correct.  Mankad has really sufferered with injuries over the past few years; I think he has had problems with his knees.

Harsh didn't play between the end of November 2006 and mid-November 2007 and then lost the four matches he played between mid-November and the end of the year. He then lost in R2 of qualifying in the first two GB Futures this year and this is the first time this year he has made a main draw.

Yes, last week's main draw shows Harsh with a ranking 719.  So that must be his protected ranking, I guess.

You can only use a protected ranking a limited amount of times, is that right??  So he must have used it at GB2, but not GB1 & 3.

Anyone speak Italian? - I think Matt Illingworth lost?

G.A.: Prossimi impegni?

F.C.: Dovrei giocare un futures in Germania, ma sono sorti alcuni problemi con i voli da qui.

G.A.: Grazie Fabio, disponibile come sempre.

F.C.: Grazie a te! E' sempre un piacere.

F.C. = Fabio Colangelo
G.A. = Giuseppe Anselmo

no matt won!

From Tipton (Great Britain) Fabio Colangelo there talks about its last match, lost, unfortunately, 6-3 6-3 with a local gambler.

Fabio Colangelo G. TO. : Hello Fabio, com' went today (with M. Illingworth)?

F. C. : Hello, I did not feel myself well like yesterday, but until 3-2 for me and service, I succeeded to monitor. ...lui there played a big game and I is not more succeeded to play.

G. to. : This winter you are concentrated yourself a lot on the law, noted some enhancement from the first English trasferta? Today it worked?

F. C. : For how much it pertains the law, I am satisfied. With respect to the first tournament (Sunderland, editor's note), here went very better! Yesterday a lot well, today I played badly all of the blows included the law, but did not be disastrous.

G. to. : Next engagements?

F. C. : I should play a futures in Germany, but I am you some problems with the flights hence.

G. to. : Thanks Fabio, available like always.

F. C. : Thanks to you! And 'always a pleasure.
