DJ is unable to get online as much as he used to and has asked me to complete the "British Successes" threads for 2008 (N.B. this note is repeated on the other successes threads, so if you've read a note that starts like this on one of the other threads, so can safely ignore this one!) so I have now done that.
I've also done what I promised DJ months ago, i.e. created a proper 'roll of honour' page on the site for each of these threads - you can find links to them in the "BRITISH SUCCESSES" section of the revamped stats page at http://www.britishtennis.net/stats.html - do feel free, as ever, to point out any errors or make suggestions. Btw some errors on the original lists thread have already been corrected on the webpage version but not in this thread.
Putting these lists onto web pages ensures consistent formatting (virtually impossible on Activeboard unless you know exactly how the original poster has done the formatting) and that tables for prior years will be easier to find than prior years' threads will be once they are un-stickied.
Now that the pages have been set up for 2008, it should be easy enough to do the same for 2009, as long as the section specialists don't mind helping out by pointing out the things I don't automatically pick up while doing the GB top 25 tables, e.g. tournament wins for doubles and juniors and new career highs for doubles and for singles outside the top 1000.
So, once 2009 starts, I intend to de-sticky the 2008 successes threads, and start a new 2009 one in each section with just a link to the stats pages in the top post, with people posting updates in the rest of the thread that I'll then transfer to the web pages every week or two. Or I can send a copy of the spreadsheet that creates the web pages to a specialist if they'd prefer to update it themselves.

Hi Steven, It's good to see Jocelyn Rae topping the lists for the most new career highs in both singles and doubles this year, it sort of justifies her inclusion in my list of five most improved players this year. I have been keeping an eye on her progress ever since watching her as an unranked player demolishing the 3rd seed in the Bath tournament back in March.
That's interesting and yes, you were right to put her on the shortlist, I think, she's moved up more quietly and gradually than some, but she seems to have been consistently improving throughout the year.
Talking about the most improved players, my movers table puts Anne ahead of Laura whereas your table had them the opposite way round. That's because my calculation uses 1105th as the starting position of players who were unranked at the start of the year whereas yours uses 1152nd, which matches more closely with the position now, when there are 1153 ranked players - I'm using 1154th to work out the negative change for players who are unranked at the end of the year.
Am I wrong about there having been 1104 ranked players at the end of 2007 or have you just not been adjusting the position of the first unranked player over time to keep things simple? (I can well imagine having to count the number of players tying on the last ranked position getting a bit tedious if you have to do it every week!)
Finally, thanks for carrying on posting the new career highs on the women's successes thread, it made it a lot easier to finish off the successes page than it was for the men!

This year I started with a nominal value of 1100 for the ranking of new entries and then updated it to 1152 fairly recently. The number of ranked players can change quite rapidly, particularly after a change in rules as I believe is going to happen in 2009. 2007 for example started the year with about 1500 and ended with about 1100. A case could be made for setting the value at the number ranked at the end of the previous year or for the number to be updated each week or for it to be set separately for each new player as they enter the rankings. The problem with sticking with the value at the end of the previous year is that a player's ranking could then fall on the day they first enter the rankings, which didn't seem quite right. Either of the other two would at least ensure that new players showed a rise of at least one place on the day they entered the lists.
Thanks, that's excellent and hopefully means we have virtually all of the singles highs for both the men and the women now. I'm pretty sure DJ didn't start collecting CHs until the end of January so I'm not surprised there are quite a few missing there. It's easy to miss them at any time unless you are keeping weekly records. For singles at least, new CHs get highlighted as soon as I paste the new ranking list into the spreadsheet which produces the weekly stats tables, so they should be ok in future.
Edit: These additions mean Amanda Elliott got the most singles career highs of any GB woman in 2008 with 18, i.e. she is now ahead of Jocelyn and Mel.

I'm not surprised Amanda ended with the most CHs she had a very good start to the season along with Anna Fitzpatrick and Naomi Broady. Amanda was rather ambitious with the tournaments she entered later in the season which was good experience but not the surest way of accumulating points. Anna Got injured in the 2nd half and Naomi ran into problems with the authorities.
