RE: British Men - Top 25 etc table

I'm sure James would be delighted however it happened.  IMO at 100 you are one of the top 100 players worldwide.

All players are pleased with rankings rises, no matter how small and whether as the result of their own good week or someone else dropping as the result of a bad week.  Might just make the difference between alts and qualies, qualies and MD or even a seeding.  Players take all the help they can get in this respect!

Don't worry, in my opinion he would be too and of course, if he is WR 100 on Monday, he will have done it with all his wins over the last year, so I don't think it would devalue it in the slightest if it happened that way. I meant if it didn't make any difference to anything else, maybe it feels better to get there with a win and people are then more likely to notice it too.

Of course, when Andy broke into the top 10 for the first time, it was someone else's loss (Haas, if I remember correctly) that clinched it for him and I'm sure Andy didn't care

Might as well sneak in on Monday with points ( just a net 5 ) coming off next week.

Be great to storm into the top 100 on his own results, but much fussed ? I very much doubt it. His results have brought him to the brink and the achievement means so much more than the actual way it is finally achieved for the first time.

I'd still spin it as a great period has resulted in James entering the top 100 :)

I really hope that he does sneak in. However much his coach may (hopefully) try and play it down as a target and milestone, I am sure it is on Wardy's mind. Getting in, even on a week when he isn't playing, will allow him to "box that one off" and then get back to the more important matters of continuing his improvement and consistency, as he has done so admirably during this last 6 months.

According to live rankings, chance for James to sneak into the top 100 this week, if results in Helsinki go in his favour (Sela beat Berankis and then lose in SFs).

Sela has beaten Berankis in Helsinki (1 & 4) so we'll now have to cheer for Norbert Gombos against him in the semis tomorrow!

Go Norbert. You've never has such a big fanclub as you will have tomorrow.

I hate to rain on peoples' Norbert Gombos fan parades but the live rankings that have James as virtual WR 100 at the moment seem to have forgotten about Dustin Brown - he is WR 87 at the moment with no points due off on Monday (he does have 48 points coming off on Monday week but that wouldn't drop him behind James anyway) yet doesn't appear anywhere on the live-tennis.eu/ list at the moment - possibly just a temporary glitch when the points for his Brescia R2 win were added on.

Anyway, I think the highest James can reach on Monday is 101, unfortunately.

i thought there was a chance there might be a mistake as james was down as provisional 101 earlier in the week... oh well

anyway, would be great if he did it himself by getting through a round (or 3) at the aussie open, say

Yes, I had to check properly because it would have been even more disappointing if Gombos had won tomorrow and we'd found out it was wrong after that - plus tweeting that he'd made the top 100 when he hadn't would have been awful, even if the many of the journos might well have picked it up unquestioningly wink

Those live rankings pages are extremely useful, since it would take ages to keep track of all the players who could possibly affect the rankings of Brits other than Andy but they are (inevitably) sometimes a place or two out, so when a Brit is that close to a big milestone, it's always a good idea to check.

This week is not proving to be great for James' ranking. With his Toyota points from last year coming off he dropped 5 points (15 points replaced by a 10). This resulted in De Schepper going above and now Ito and Berankis have both gone above him by reaching the QFs of the Toyota and Andria challengers. This will see James drop to 105 in the rankings and there are still 2 more players who can pass him. Maximo Gonzalez will do so if he wins any of his three RR matches at the Challenger Tour finals as will Go Soeda is he wins the Toyota challenger.

I am pretty sure that James' ranking of next Monday will be unchanged over the next few weeks and will be the ranking used for his Australian Open entry. For the last five years the final cut off for direct acceptance has been 107,107,108,105,108.

Thanks, RJA, so could be very tight for Aussie Open main draw. And I believe JMDP for one could be claiming a PR place.

Clearly don't want to overdo it. But it is maybe a bit strange that James didn't plan a week or two in Japan after Australia rather than his abandoned plan of Helsinki.

Gonzalez did manage to get one win in the challenger finals and Soeda did win the Toyota challenger so James' end of year ranking will be 107. Very much touch and go for getting a DA into the Aussie Open.

I think Kyle might like to see his GB top 3 place confirmed in the top 25 table, given that it appears both Liam and Ed should be having 10 points coming off this coming Monday.

I assume that Aljaz Bedene will be officially added to the top 25 table for week 14 with a GB ranking.

At the same time Dan Evans will drop out. The two are not directly linked ( ironic / whatever that might have been ) since Dan would have dropped out anyway as he would have fallen to no 26, behind Toby Martin.
