Mel breaks for 4-2 you could see that coming its been quite close and as the match has progressed Mel has started to get more of a rhythm on her serve and has started to make in roads in the return games

Well done girls. Two of the three wins came from retirements but oh well, you'll take it. Unlucky for Mel but it was always going to be a tough task for her.
Excellent start - the first time since 2000 that 5 Brits have made the second round. On that occasion Julie Pullin qualified and won a round, with Arvind Parmar and Jamie Delgado (Lucky Loser) also reaching the main draw - so hopefully that is a good omen.
Two of tonight's opponents are in stunning form: Monica Niculescu has won 19 of her last 21 matches - all in straight sets - whilst Yanina Wickmayer has won 20 out of 22, only losing to a couple of players in the top 50.
