Wk 1 - WTA Auckland - Tier 4

Absolutely stunning results....I'm just like jawdrop.gifjawdrop.gifjawdrop.gif

Never expected all 3 of them to make it through to the final qualies round given the sheer quality of the likes of Kremer and Kerber....if the draw is right at the Aussie Open, multiple qualifiers doesn't look beyond the realms of possibility !

Naomi and Mel have become only the 3rd and 4th active British players to beat top 100 opponents outside the UK !

Mel's win is the stand-out result of the day for me....because Kremer has been top 20 and won this title in the past !

South - Baltacha is going to be an absolute cracker tomorrow

The streaming starts tomorrow I think so who knows, we might be able to watch !

Yes, utterly amazing - I mean, I know Kerber and Kremer are on the way down now, but they're still in the top 100, very experienced, and Naomi & Mel have made mincemeat of them!

Auckland has a reputation for being the southern hemisphere's equivalent of Manchester (except because it's on a peninsula, the weather is even more changeable - they can have four seasons in a day), so they might find the weather in Melbourne a bit less condusive, but even so, they've just beaten two players who will be in the main draw, their confidence must be sky high!

Another extraordinary day. I was watching the scores (up until the end of the first set in Mel's match anyway) with a big grin.

Very well done to all three.

Brilliant news w00t.gif

Come on, girls, let's have two of you in the main draw! (Pity it can't be three!)

Yes amazing results by all our girls, looking at who the girls could potentially draw in the first round are: Sofia Arvidsson, Aravane Rezai, Elini Danilidou or Pauline Parmentier. All are v good players but winnable, im going for Bally and Naomi to qualify!

Absolutely stunning set of results - 6 straight sets wins - especially from Mel, being by some distance her best result outside the UK.

The OOP is (9.30 pm GMT)

Court 6 - 10:30am start
Melanie South vs. Elena Baltacha
f/b Naomi Cavaday vs. Ahsha Rolle

To answer an earlier question about LLs - the WTA still uses ranking order of final round losers, whilst for ITF events there is a draw.

Posted by someone who's been to both days of qualifying:

"Can I just say that after seeing both of Cavadays matches in Auckland so far, shes good. Top 100 by years end easy. She has been the most impressive Brit in Auckland hands down. Shes got game, wow, wow, wow is all I can say."

What a fantastic start to the new season from all the girls. Let's hope this is just the start of good things to come this year. Success breeds success or so they say so i'm sure the girls are all cheering each other on. Shame that one will lose in Mel or Bally but at least it means that 1 will be in the main draw. Really think Naomi can win again as she has a very good game on her day. WELL DONE GIRLS......KEEP GOING.worship.gif party.gif

Rolle will be a good match for Cavaday! I hope she can win.

jawdrop.gif at South. Hope this is a long term renaissance!

I think Bally will craCK THE TOP 100 this year!

How many points for reaching this final round? And how many for the guaranteed qualifier?

3 points for reaching the FQR, 7 for qualifying - effectively 8 since they still get a point for losing in main draw R1.
