Getting to number 4 is a big achievement, and I think he'll keep it for the rest of the year as Davydenko and especially Ferrer just have too much to defend to realistically overtake him, unless they win both MS events.

Still not sure they'll be a big 4 yet, unless Murray improves on a clay court, as you couldn't see Murray winning a clay MS event, while you could see the other 3 winning one, and there are quite a few players ranked below Murray that I'd have as favourite to beat him on a clay court, but as he'll avoid the big 3 until the semi's, he's got a decent shot of making QF's if he gets the right draw

Also, Andy now into Master's cup-where he'll be one of the few not defending points.

Seems that for ranking, you are allowed top 18 +Master's cup. Which is a little hard on the world number 9....

Agreed being in top 4 seeds will help massively-no Fed/Nadal/Djoko 'til the semis...

How great it is to see Andy sitting proudly now at no 4 in the rankings and already qualified for Shanghai, which as has been said is basically "free" additional points for him, well as long as he wins at least one match ( I am presuming it is seeded and if he is still no.4 then he can meet only one of these ranked 1 & 2 in his group and the ranked 3 player will be in the other group ).

Remember these days when we were looking at so many results of different players almost every week and Madeline would have a supply of pins to stick into such as Olivier Rochus, Volandri and Malisse. Could he rise to no 38 this week or stay at 42 or even drop to 43. Keep watching, folk. These days don't seem so long ago.

Now at no 4, he is 1815 points behind Djokovic and 550 points ahead of Ferrer, so he's not moving anywhere in the ranking in the near future. What will we do with all that time some of us spent following the twists and turns in his ranking ? smile

Maybe, time available to take up a new hobby. Who knows !

Quick update before Masters Cup changes - Andy is now 1225 points behind Djokovic in 3rd and 1105 ahead of Davydenko in 5th. Ferrer has dropped out of sight!

I think it's good that the pins are going rusty. Will be so much better for sticking into Djokovic early next year. Let's hope he hasn't had a tetanus jab for a while.

Yes, get that gap to Djokovic to under 1,000 ( or 2,000 in new money ), and with the Aussie Open coming up, then we are talking smile

The 'catch date' (i.e. when Andy would catch Nole if he scores the same number of ranking points as him between now and then because of Nole having more points to defend) has now come back to April and as you can see fro mthe graph at http://www.britishtennis.net/top4.htm?n=1, it wouldn't take much to bring it forward to even earlier.

Is my reading of it right that Andy can overtake Djokovic this week, if results go the right way?

According to the Masters Cup site, the following ranking points are available:

SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS ATP RANKING POINTS

Each Round Robin Match Win 20 ATP Race points 100 South African Airways ATP Ranking points
Semifinal Win 40 ATP Race points 200 South African Airways ATP Rankings points
Final Win 50 ATP Race points 250 South African Airways ATP Rankings points
Undefeated Champions 150 ATP Race points 750 South African Airways ATP Ranking points

I take this to mean that if Andy wins the tournament undefeated he gets 100+100+100+200+250+750 = 1500 points, enough to pass Djokovic if the Serb loses his last round-robin game and his semi. Or is the Undefeated Champions line just showing what a player would get in total if he won all his games?

You're not alone, Hoose, half of the Andy Murray forum seem to be thinking the same thing, but the 750 isn't a bonus, it's just the total of the points you get for winning every match. Still very generous though!
