What a way to finish the year, hopefully Alex can really utilise his new ranking as now he'll be seeded in alot of futures and able to get in to a good few challengers as well. Well done Slabba!!
Great stuff from Alex, seems a while since we had a tournament win to celebrate and really good that he's done it beating higher ranked players as well.
this is Alex's first futures title....the Wrexham 05 win was a satellite.....3 finals this year !! Amazing week...thats a new career high of 408 now ! The guy he beat in the final - Gard is ranked 257...has made 9 futures finals this year and semis of a challenger plus he's good enough to give top 100 players a good match !! and Alex beat him 4&3
top 300 by June has to be the next big goal with only 4 pts to defend till then !
Fantastic way to end the year. If Alex really does have only 4 points to defend till next June then he has an amazing opportunity to go further up the rankings next year. He must have a lot of confidence right now and we need some new blood higher up the pecking order.
If I were do have a say I would suggest a few weeks training. He doesn't have the pressure of points to defend and, if he did play, he'd be up against players who were fresh from a winter break that began much earlier.
Remember what happened to Josh Goodall earlier this year? We don't want that to happen to Slabba.
Against all odds, 21 year-old Briton Alexander Slabinsky won the second leg of the Oceanic Bank sponsored 7th Governors Tennis tournament in Lagos at the weekend. The event which held at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club saw the Briton, backed by several tennis fans upstage the number one seed Catalin-Lonut Gard of Romania in two straight sets of 6-4, 6-3 with the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Barrister Babatunde-Raji Fashola in attendance. It was however a standing ovation for the Briton when the game ended in his favour. Slabinsky, basking in the euphoria of his victory said he was happy to be part of the 7th edition of the Governor's Cup this year, declaring that he would go back to the Queens' country to tell his people of the hospitality which he received from Nigerians during the two-week tournament in Nigeria. Governor Fashola presented the winner with a gold plated trophy. While congratulating the Briton for the victory Gov. Fashola urged him to step up his game so that he will find himself in the top echelon of his career in the nearest future.
