Nothing wrong with pedantry; some of my best friends are pedants! I agree with everything you say except for one vital point. Last week's Nigerian Future was at '$15,000 + Hospitality' level, which carries more points than a standard $15K (1, 4, 8, 16, 24 as opposed to 1, 3, 6, 12, 18). Alex earned 8 for his semi-final spot, rather than 6, so will have 54, not 52, come Monday. Incidentally, this week's is also a 'Hospitality', so a win for Alex today will earn him an extra 3 points to add to the 1 from yesterday.
Thanks wolf and DJ for that vital bit of information. Even more incentive for Slabba to progress as far as he can this week.
Incidentally, I notice that the UK Futures next year are £10Ks rather than £15Ks. Is this to encourage more UK players to test themselves overseas? Perhaps it will be better to invest the money in supporting players who are willing to travel rather than paying it in prize money to the mainly overseas winners of this year's £15Ks
Could it be that we were seeing "too high" a standard of field in the UK futures, which meant we ended up having just one or two brits getting a DA. With 10Ks, we'll hopefully see less players ranked 250-500 turning up and more chance for Slabba, Kasiri et al to be seeded and for the guys in the high triple figures to get DAs and progress.
might be that. I reckon British tournaments are a safe bet with regards to hotels, food poisoning (hopefully a lack of it), court surface, prize money allocation etc... which may be why a lot of players come here.
Slabba reaches the QF's by the way - Alexander SLABINSKY (GBR) (6) defeated Abdul-Mumin BABALOLA (NGR) 6-4 6-4
Good decision to move to 10Ks - I wrote a letter in the LTA magazine early this year complaining at there only being 15K last year as we had no-one with the ranking to play in them (except our challenger players playing down). Even got a lengthy response from the LTA Competitions Manager. What they should do is have 10Ks early and late in the year with some mixed 15Ks with 10Ks in the middle when the ranking required to make the main draw is usually higher.
Ironically, Slabba and a few others are now getting to a level where 15K tournaments are about the right level, but it will enable many more GBR players to get main draw entries.
