Hope you find this interesting. It's a summary of the major movers in the ratings I've developed - changes from the end of Dec 2007 to the end of Jan 2008.
The Brits
Andy Murray is up from 7th to 5th! Andy's win in Qatar by far counteracting his Tsonga loss in the Oz Open.
Jamie Baker is up an impressive 59 places to 218th (just 1 behind Boggo) mainly due to his Aussie Open qualifying run, beating fine players Schukin, Peya & Kollerer on the way.
Matt Illingworth has knocked down the door of the Top 1000, rising 208 places in the month to 978. Excellent wins over Mankad, Flanagan, Wiesler & Colangelo taking him there.
Sean Thornley has risen a super 237 places to 1164. He had 3 straight sets wins over higher-ranked players at Tipton.
Dan Smethurst's win yesterday over Klier helped his ranking improve from 1624 to 1301.
But George Coupland has had most dramatic rise in the rankings from up from 1975 to 1356. Wins over Sletting, Rushby & Kunnap ensured this rise of 619 places!
Sadly, Rushby and Flanagan both had a bad January, both falling over 80 places.
But I reckon a pretty good month for the Brits.
The Non-Brits
Djokovic is now No.2!
Tsonga goes from 29th to 12th.
20 year-old Andrei Goloubev is up 79 places to 90th - he won a Challenger in Germany after qualifying for it.
Just turned 18 year-old, Kei Nishikori, rose from 258 to 164, reaching the semis in the Miami challenger before withdrawing.
ITF Junior No.2, Vladimir Ignatik, rose 141 places to 341st, after winning his first Futures, USA F2 in Miami.
And our Polish friend, Wojciech Starakiewicz, has gone up from 1507 to 1102 with his endeavours in Sunderland, Sheffield and Tipton.
Jamie Baker had a great February - including his Davis Cup win over Calleri and his Texan Futures title - he has risen from 218th to 171st.
Baker is now the new GB no.2, over-taking Boggo (who also rose 25 places to 192 [his Kim win not yet included]).
James Ward had a good Feb too - he rose 42 places to 668, after his good run to the Cuba F2 semis, but Chris Eaton has kept ahead of him (up 14 to 643).
But the adventures of the Thailand Trio - Flanagan, Brewer, Irwin - was a bit of a disaster, seeing them win 0 out of 4 matches. This sees them fall a combined 100 places.
The Spanish expedition of Milton (-30), Evans (-40), Cox (-75), Blake (-27), Illingworth (-113) & Rice (-85) was a "struggle" too, though I'm sure it'll be a good experience for them all in the long term.
The one shining light from Spain was Dan Smethurst, who qualified through the 4 qualifying rounds and his 1st round match. This saw him rise 144 places to 1157 (up from 1624 at end of '07).
Further down the rankings, Alexander Ward also had a big rise up 173 places to 1771 following his Spanish endeavours.
Andy Murray fell to 6th, as Nalby overtook him. Nalbandian has now won 23 of his last 25 matches (including beating Federer (x2), Nadal (x2), Djokovic & Jamie Baker).
After rising from 258 to 164 in January, Japan's Kei Nishikori has had an even more remarkable February, by winning Delray Beach ATP, the 18 year old has climbed to 67th in the rankings!
I think Chris' tournaments (& opponents) tend to be tougher than James', that's why James' ATP ranking is so much higher than Chris'. For instance Croatia was far tougher than Cuba / Mexico.
The following shows that Eaton on average loses to players with a higher rating than Ward.
That matches my impression and it also suggests what I've always suspected, i.e. that it's much easier to gain points in Futures in South America than it is over here - I'm sure the same applies to Challengers too.
It suggests all this stuff about points being easier to gain in the UK is rubbish (we all knew that anyway, of course), though it perhaps explains why lots of French players play in Futures over here. Has any of this been correlated with whether the events are 15Ks or 10Ks though, otherwise GB Futures may look a lot weaker this year!
I'm surprised Canada is so high up btw - maybe it's just qualifying that's always weak there, not main draws.
