Was undecided where to post this article from yesterday's Metro, as it talks a lot about the DC tie with Argentina next February, but it also discusses Boggo a bit more generally. I think it's little more than yet another variation on reports which have appeared elsewhere, but it does also seem to add a few bits to what I've already read:
Bogdanovic can fill the breach in Davis Cup, claims Tim
Tim Henman tells DANNY GRIFFITHS why his retirement from the sport should be seen as a great opportunity by Britain's youngsters
TIM HENMAN believes Alex Bogdanovic is the obvious candidate to fill the void in Great Britain's Davis Cup team left by his own retirement from the game. Henman, who defeated Stefan Edberg in a charity match at the BlackRock Masters on Tuesday ( ), called time on his career following the victory over Croatia at Wimbledon in September, which made sure of the team's place in the elite World Group for 2008.
John Lloyd's men begin their campaign with a first-round tie on clay against Argentina in Buenos Aires next February, when an unenviable burden is likely to fall on British N° 1, Andy Murray. The Scot is expected to have to play on all three days of the tie (*), but Henman believes Bogdanovic can play a valuable supporting role, provided he continues to improve under the tutelage of coach, Brad Gilbert.
"I think with Alex it's not about his tennis ability," said Henman. "You look at the way he hits the ball. He strikes it a lot better than a lot of players on the main tour. I think the areas where he needs the biggest improvement are physically and mentally. I know Brad is going to be on his case in a big way and I think his knowledge and his motivation could be of enormous benefit to Alex. My retirement should be a great carrot for the younger guys. At the moment it would be Bogdanovic and Jamie Baker that look to have the best opportunity of stepping up, so hopefully, those guys can get off to a good start in the year, play some matches, get some confidence and we will see.
The Argentina tie is as tough as it gets. It's not unwinnable, but it's going to be a very, very tough task because they have got amazing strength in depth and obviously got home advantage and playing on clay is a tough task for us. There's so much on Andy Murray's shoulders and I know what it's like to play on all three days. It's difficult, no question, although it is much easier when you're winning. There's a physical challenge, obviously, playing five sets on clay, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and you're also going to need to be mentally resilient in that type of environment. Plenty have done it in the past and I'm sure he can do it in the future, but it emphasises the point that we need to get some greater strength in depth."
(*) That, of course, presupposes that the tie will still be live by the third day!
