Masters cup - Shanghai

Nadal beats Djokovic 64 64 (some outstanding points in the match)

If Gasquet wins in 3, then everyone has to get the calculators out to work out who has won the highest percentage of games... round robin is so great to follow...

I love the first paragraph of the Gruaniad's TMC article today:

"Andy Roddick has played Roger Federer 16 times over the past six years and lost 15. At least in all those previous tournaments he has had to play the Swiss only once. Now there looms the possibility of two defeats within three days. Federer demolished the American 6-4, 6-2 in the final round-robin match last night, with a real probability they might meet in tomorrow's final. And it could turn out to be a double murder most horrid."

Duckboy must be quacking under the strain smile.gif

Other interesting bits:

There is no doubt that Roddick's suspect backhand has improved significantly under the tutelage of Jimmy Connors, although it is rumoured that in a week of splits the two may be about to part. Andy Murray noted that Brad Gilbert had failed to make any significant change to the Roddick backhand, which caused him ultimately to question whether Gilbert would be able to enhance his own progress substantially.

Federer, currently without a coach, was asked if he might be interested in the garrulous American. "No chance," he replied with terse finality. biggrin

Federer hammers Nadal 6-4, 6-1 to set up a final against Ferrer

However, for most of the first set it appeared as if the scoreline would be very different....Federer seemed edgy and it was his awesome serving which kept him in the match. Overall he got 83% in !!! At 3-3 he went 0-30 down but pulled out 4 bombs to hold and then at 4-4 he was 15-30 down and then faced break point after some superb passes from Nadal but pin-point shots down the line, saved the day. Federer started to find his range on return from then on and just blew Nadal off the court.

First set he looked a little erratic from the back and until 5-4 Nadal was holding easily, Federer not doing much with the returns to hurt him. However for the final 8 games, Federer was really stepping in and attacking the 2nd serves and Nadal was powerless.

When Federer's serving that well on a fast court, Nadal needs to be a lot more aggressive from the back...he doesnt look to move up the court in the same way that Federer does...he was taking control of the net time after time and reading the passing shots so well

Federer made 26 winners to 16 ues and Nadal made 10 & 10

Didn't see the Ferrer match but jawdrop.gif @ that scoreline !

And I will vote for a Federer win - oh wait, it is over now!

Well I couldn't post earlier so I may as well have the kudos now of being right in my prediction, even if I only predicted it to the other half and the cat!

Roger showed again what a gulf there is between him and the following pack, apart from the glitch against Gonzo. However, though I have been a fan of his for the past six years, he is definitely getting a little bit more likely to be beaten in anything but the slams and Masters Cup, where he is record-chasing  - and I bet I am not alone on here in hoping Andy is one of the ones to beat him next year. I feel Andy never got the recognition he should have done for that win in Cinci last year, too many people writing it off as a "tank" by Federer when in fact I think it was actually the start of his showing some vulnerability at the tournaments that he is not so interested in.
