Watched 3 of these matches yesterday so thought I'd give my views on the players/matches
Konta won 6-1, 6-1 but it was closer than that, Askew had 4 break back points at 1-3 in the 1st set, after missing those she seemed to lose belief but if shed taken them it could have been a lot closer. Konta is a tall girl, big serve and great backhand. Forehand is the wing which breaks down more though she still found some lovely angles off that side. Askew stands very close to the baseline, takes everything really early and hits with a lot of pace for a 13 yr old ! Ripped some stunning shots down the line off both sides but wasnt really consistent enough today, shanked too many shots long. Konta has a lot of variety, hitting with slice, high loopy topspins and then flat out pace while Askew was just hitting at one pace for most of the match. Still very young and raw though, lot of talent there....
Konta will be becoming British soon which is excellent news, next few months I think....she was being watched by Martin Lee (who coaches her I think....he was also watching Nebojanko)
was very surprised at Nebojanko as she's beaten much better players than Sanduska...nearly qualified for a 25K last month....however, she was never really in the match at all yesterday...just didnt seem to turn up mentally more than anything
Sanduska is a tall girl while Nebojanko's about 5ft7....Sanduska has a really big serve, aggressive off the forehand and hit a number of quality backhands down the line. Annie got broken in the 2nd game to go 2-0 down, broke back immediately but then got broken immediately again to go 1-3 down. Survived a number of bps to hold for 2-4 and had a break back pt at 3-5 but fluffed a forehand...got broken at the start of the 2nd and it was one-way traffic from there.
With Nebojanko, she has a great backhand, particularly down the line and she crashed a couple of classy winners off that side in the 1st set......however, her 2nd serve is very attackable, she didn't get many 1st serves in and Sanduska was stepping in and either hitting return winners or dictating play from the word go. She pretty much out-hit Nebojanko who (being quite slight compared to some of the other girls) seems to play a counter-punching game, her forehand really let her down though yesterday, too many errors off that side which never really allowed her to get stuck into the rallies. Once the usually reliable backhand started to break down too in the 2nd set, the game was up
Was strange as there were several British girls watching the match (including Amy Askew) and all seemed to be supporting Sanduska apart from Martin Lee
In reply to this and tennisbrain.....sadly I was only able to go on Tuesday so saw mens rd1 matches and womens final round qualies....so didn't see Broady or Windley
Just to complete my report on Tuesday's final qualies round matches....I watched Natasha Marks beat Melissa Berry 6-2, 6-3....Natasha made the final of the Nationals U18s in August (losing to Broady).....she's had some good wins in futures aswell in the summer and I was impressed with her game....she's a tall, athletic girl, has a good solid serve, forehand is a weapon - she really dominated the rallies with that shot, looks very comfortable coming forward and finishing off pts and was able to vary the play, finding angles etc. She returns well and that really put Berry under a lot of pressure, could be a bit more aggressive. Berry was a good junior player but she's suffered from injuries and like Ian Flanagan I don't think she takes it that seriously any more...she hit the occasional classy shot but was too inconsistent to trouble Natasha..missed a fair bit in the forecourt
Saw Naomi Broady hitting....lots of LTA guys were around and I don't think there are any issues between her and them now....Paul Hutchins was joking around with her and she was working with coach Luke Milligan. Saw her hitting with Webley-Smith, as has been mentioned in the past, the Broady backhand is a really classy shot
Looking at the main draw results....really disappointing that not one player made the last 8 in a 10K field, I thought there'd be at least 1 Brit in the semis.
Great win for Jenny Ren though in rd1 against 7th seed Dranets (who's ranked 629)...it was the sort of upset which looked possible though. I watched Dranets beat Lucy Warburton in Sutton earlier this year and wasn't impressed tbh, Lucy could have won if she hadn't missed so many easy short balls. She's a very, very slender girl (frame-wise she looks like one of those size-zero models) and her entire game is based around retrieving, serve is just putting the ball in play - nothing more ! Jenny can hit big from the back especially off the backhand, very impressive that she was able to outhit an opponent like that at just 14.
Stunning win for Konta in rd1 over the top seed (who was top 100 in doubles), I know she's still an Aussie but will be British soon. She went down 2&2 in the 2nd round but hard to find consistency day-in, day-out at 16.
Broady's loss was kinda expected, she must be quite rusty, her first tourney for a while...Gerlova was 3rd seed and has had success in 25Ks. I think Naomi would have a great shot of beating her though after a few more matches, particularly indoors.
The disappointing results are Liz Thomas and Emily Webley-Smith losing in rd2....Thomas got thrashed by Sanduska...don't know what it is about her but all the Brits seem to be finding their worst form against her...she's quite a big hitter with a good serve but shouldn't beat Liz 1&2.
Webley-Smith lost in 3 to the American qualifier Emily Fraser who I watched in qualies...similar game to W-S actually, likes to get into the net a lot, tries to mix up the play
