Great win for Naomi, Fichman can be a tough player...best way to describe her is as "a wall with attitude." Canadian tourneys are always good spectators wise and Fichman had quite a few supporters according to Naomi. Apparently the umpires are really bad there with the calling...but from quarters onwards they've had 3 line judges too which helps
Some info on the Argentinian Argeri in today's quarters:
Currently ranked 184, really struggled in her rd1 match here, lucky to get through but progressed through her last 2 matches reasonably comfortably. She's really been on form lately, making a final and two 25K semis in Mexico. Very consistent in the challengers this year, came close to qualifying for the Aussie Open too.
Great chance for both players, hopefully Naomi can make her 2nd 25K final.
Naomi will move up to approx 184 now...up to 178 if she wins today
hmm does seem quite a crazy schedule over the next few weeks, but I cant see where else she would be playing.....Pune is a very weak tourney so big chances for Naomi to rack up pts
According to Tennis Canada (www.tenniscanada.ca) the semis and doubles finals can be viewed from 4pm GMT at rtsp://qt2.netro.ca/tenniscanadaqt.sdp
However there is also a report on the site about an injury Naomi sustained in the singles which forced her to retire from the doubles semi:
"In the semifinals, the all-Canadian duo defeated Naomi Cavaday and Sabine Lisicki when the British-German tandem had to withdraw at 3-2 in the first set due to an ankle injury suffered by Cavaday.
The injury came during Cavadays singles match, where she was playing Fichman for a spot in the semifinals. Despite rolling her ankle in the last game, the No. 5 seed was able to hold on for the 6-1, 7-5 victory. Fichman fought hard throughout the match as she held serve until her final service game, but she was ultimately defeated by a player ranked more than 200 spots higher than her in the world."
"Lisicki Upsets Top Seed to Advance to Tevlin Challenger Final
November 10, 2007
Eighth-seeded Sabine Lisicki (Germany) will play for the singles titles at the Tevlin Challenger after defeating top-seeded Renata Voracova (Czech Republic) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a three-set thriller at the Rexall Centre in Toronto on Saturday.
Lisicki is no stranger to success on Canadian soil, owning an impressive 14-3 singles record north of the border including a quarter-final appearance at the Tevlin Challenger in 2006.
In the final, Lisicki will face fourth-seeded Maria-Jose Argeri (Argentina) who earned her berth in the championship after her semifinal opponent Naomi Cavaday (Great Britain) was forced to retire with a high ankle sprain. "
