Andy's Live Ranking During Week 44 (Paris Masters)

The New Table is posted here (on britishtennis.net)

Status before the final in St Petersburg (will change if Andy wins in St Pete's)
Andy reached the third round in Paris last year, so he's defending 75 points, which means he drops back down to 16 as the week begins. Moya's the player who overtakes.

Robredo, Haas, Berdych, Gasquet, Chela, Monaco and Mathieu are the other players dropping places.

Andy, as a seed, doesn't play in round 1.

If he wins his first match (round 2), he can overtake Moya, Gasquet and Berdych, if they each lose their first matches (also round 2)
No- one can overtake Andy until the quarter- finals at least.

Edit: changed after Vik's very sensible question and me realising my mistake - see later in the thread.

Do you mean if andy wins his round 2 match? but if moya loses his 1st round match then andy will overtake him without playing his 2nd rd match.

Thanks Vik - my bad - I'd ignored the fact that Andy and Moya don't play R1, but have a bye into R2. It's better news: he can overtake not just Moya, but also Gasquet and Berdych if they lose their first matches.

I'll update that first post

Andy's win in St Pete's means he starts at 12th in the rankings so Moya is out of the picture biggrin.gif (for a few rounds at least).

I think that Andy drops to 14th due to defending but I'll leave Rob to confirm that.

Since last year's Tennis Masters Cup Finals points from China also will come off in the rankings after the Paris Masters, do you not want to reflect this in the running totals ?

According to the ATP site :

"The South African Airways ATP Rankings period is the immediate past 52 weeks, except for:
(i) the Tennis Masters Cup, which is dropped on the Monday following the last ATP event of the following year;
(ii) Futures Series Tournaments that are only entered into the System on the second Monday following the Tournament's week. Once entered, all Tournaments, except for the Tennis Masters Cup, remain in the System for 52 consecutive weeks."

And this is indeed what happened last year.

Therefore, to take James Blake for instance, he is not just defending 75 points from last year's Paris Masters, he is going to lose 400 points from last year's Tennis Master's Cup.

The New Table is posted here (on britishtennis.net)

REVISED AFTER ANDY WON IN ST PETERSBURG

Andy reached the third round in Paris last year, so he's defending 75 points, however he doesn't drop any places as. Ljubicic and Berdych are defending points from Paris and the Masters Cup from 2006.

Robredo, Gasquet, Chela, Monaco, Mathieu and Nalbandian are the other players dropping places.

Andy, as a seed, doesn't play in round 1.

If he wins his first match (round 2), he can overtake Haas, CanasRobredo and Blake if they each lose their first matches (also round 2)
If he loses his first match, he's within range of Berdych, Gasquet and Moya

Full "what-if" will turn up after all the round 2 matches have been done and there's a bit less of a field to worry about.

I wonder if Bethan can do us a "What-If" for the race?

Edited to inlude the effect of taking off Masters Cup points (Thanks Indiana!)

Actually, if you take out last year's Tennis Masters Cup points from the rankings running totals, as will in fact be the case in practice, then I am pretty sure that I am correct in saying that the rankings and the race should be the same for the top players.  They will cover the same 18 tournaments.

Just that the ranking points will be 5 times the race points.

pretty much spot-on. thing is, I've not taken out the masters points...... hmm. might be a relatively easy addition to the spreadsheet.......

Strictly, though, the MC points do not drop off until 5 November, do they? Though I suppose as there are no more top level tournaments it makes no difference if we take them off a week early.

The link isn't working for me. Maybe because you are busy working on the table? It takes me to a heading for week 43 but clicking on that gets me precisely nowhere.
