Murray lost in the third round last year (Hrbaty !) in Paris.
Is Andys new '5th' score is 22 pts from the Memphis semi ? Which means for Andy to gain any more points in Paris he would have to get to the QF ?
No, it's better news than that. The 5th score thing only works for the 5 'best of the rest' tournaments. Paris is an AMS masters series tournament meaning the points are mandatory so everyone will add them to their race points. So it's simply a case of adding the new points to the total points. (much easier to work out).

lol, it's relatively simple AFTER you've understood it. Until then it's near impossible to get straight. It doesn't help that there's two different systems in operation for the entry ranking and race.

Drew wrote that Paris points are 100, 50, 45, 25.... what are the rest of the numbers?
In addition to Djokovic another unfortunate aspect of the Paris draw is that even if Haas and Robredo oblige by fallling at the first hurdle - those numbers suggest that in all probability Gasquet or Blake will get 25 points (for reaching the quarters) since they are drawn to meet in the last 16.
All such discussion is moot if Andy doesnt win this afternoon of course.
It's all so close. If only Andy had 4 more points, he'd currently be in 8th place ahead of Haas, Robredo and Blake and would have much more chance.
As it is he must reach at least one round further than all three of them and at least as far as Berdych, Gasquet, Moya and Ljubicic.
As folk say, I am sure that he will realistically have to reach at least the semis.
In doing this, he would be taking care of Blake / Gasquet by himself.
The main worry would then be that Haas and Robredo are in the other half of the draw, away from Andy himself and Federer ( Haas in Nadal quarter, Robredo in Davydenko quarter ) .
If either of them reached the semis then Andy would have to reach at least the final, which could mean having to beat Federer.
I guess it must be odds against, but he has done really well to still give himself a chance after such a midseason break.
If only he hadn't lost to Tipsarevic in Moscow As you say though, it's amazing he's in with a chance given that he gained virtually no pts for 5 months of the season and missed 2 slams !!! He'd be top 5 surely otherwise
Who knows what will happen in Paris, the tournament often throws up crazy upsets....whoever would have thought Dominic Hrbaty would have made the final last year
