I have followed the notes on the ATP page 'race bubble' so hopefully this is right. If you go out in R1 you do not get any race pts...thats right ?
So only 31 pts separate Andy from 8th spot....
If Andy wins St Petersburg he will rise to 326 points and 9th Spot. If Andy looses the final of St Petersburg he will rise to 311 points and 13th Spot I think even if Baggy wins Basel (303pts) If Andy looses his SF ofSt Petersburg he will stay at 298 pts and drop to 17th as Youzhny will overtake him as long as Baggy doesnt win Basel. If he does then Andy back down to 18th.
Unfortunately no one loses any points in the race Drew as they're all from this year so no defending. I think you've gotten confused (easily done, it's taken me a while to understand) because of the 5th result column in the ATP table. This is the lowest score in the 'best 5 other tournaments' that all players include in their Race Points total (along with the Grand Slams and Masters Series). During a normal week like this week players can only add to their total is the new points exceed their 5th best, if that's the case it's then replaced. Hope that makes sense to everyone.
Here is the new ATP table from today (link on page 1 of this thread). The brackets are my calculations and so liable to be wrong.

To look at a thing is quite different from seeing a thing and one does not see anything until one sees its beauty
If Andy wins in St. Petersburg. He will have 326 points and will rise to 11th spot. He cannot be overtaken by anyone.
If Andy is the runner up in St Petersburg. He will have 311 points and will rise to 14th. He cannot be overtaken by anyone.
If Andy loses in the semis He will have 298 points and will be overtaken by Youzhny. He could be overtaken by Baghdatis (win in Basel). Best case 17th, worst case 18th
So Drew pretty much covered it. Basically Go Andy! and boo baghdatis!!

"Andy Murray is one win away from moving to within three points of the No. 8 spot in the ATP 2007 Race after defeating Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(1) in the St. Petersburg Open semifinals."
That matches our workings above...he has 311 and if he wins he will have 326 thats 3 pts behind 8th Spot. (Haas on 329).
I presume Haas will be fit for Paris. Quite a number of those players that were ahead of Andy prior to this week have had a poor week so its really up for grabs.
Murray lost in the third round last year (Hrbaty !) in Paris.
Is Andys new '5th' score is 22 pts from the Memphis semi ? Which means for Andy to gain any more points in Paris he would have to get to the QF ?
