sorry for posting this late, havent been able to get on the computer all day since....here's Nigel Sear's comments on yesterday's matches

Katie O'Brien (GB)(1) bt Natasha Khan (GB) 6-1, 6-1: "Katie's match was very one-sided, Natasha is still struggling with a stomach muscle pull and it was going to be a tough match-up for her anyway, her game doesn't go very well against Katie's style especially with the way Katie's playing at the moment."

Mel South (GB) bt Liana Ungur (Rom)(7) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4: "Mel played very well, hit her backhand extremely well particularly down the line, her serving to the Ungur forehand on the deuce court was also very intelligent. She can actually play quite a bit better than today, she's been hampered by that wrist injury recently, can play at a higher level than that."

Amanda Elliott (GB) bt Lucie Hradecka (Cze) 7-6(2), 6-1: "Amanda played the best match I've ever seen her play, really want to see now if she can do that on a consistent basis, in particular today she seemed to have more intensity than usual."

Irina Kuzmina (Lat) bt Tara Moore (GB)(wc) 6-1, 7-6(4): "Tara played very well, had chances to win the 2nd set and with more experience and more belief she could maybe have won. She hit some great forehands, a number of winners out of nowhere."

Violette Huck (Fra)(8) bt Amanda Carreras (GB) 6-1, 6-1: "Amanda's game was too lightweight for an indoor tournaments, she needs to work on her firepower to be successful at the heighest level on surfaces other than clay. She plays on clay for most of the year."

Georgie Stoop (GB) bt Anna Smith (GB) 6-3, 5-7, 6-3: "Georgie was much better today, she'd been disappointing last week but this was a great win for her after such a long period out and it was a tight match. Sometimes its difficult to play a compatriot who's similar age etc so she did well."

The courts in Glasgow have been resurfaced and actually made slower so should suit Katie and Naomi's games. It will be interesting to see whether Mel South can up her level and push on from the rd1 win

good to see Katie in another semi but where she is ranking-wise, in order to really move up she has to make the final or win these 25Ks...just getting to semis doesnt gain her that many places

Mel was unlucky to be in Katie's quarter again....some good results for her this week, good to see that the injury isn't too serious and she can play through it.....the win over Ungur was impressive as she's such a dangerous player indoors, watched her in Glasgow, huge hitter....Mel was far from her best in that match too !

Tough match next for Katie against Kvitova who's only 17 and ranked 214. She didn't really bother much with juniors but judging from the ease with which she swept to two G1 titles this year, she's have been top 5, top 10 for sure if she played juniors all year round. Kvitova won a 25K on carpet earlier in the year, then made a 50K final in June. She beat the world no 82 in straights on clay too

report on wtaworld

(1) Katie O'Brien (GBR) Bt Melanie South (GBR) 5-7 6-3 6-3

Didn't see all of this match as it was on at the same time as Arvidsson v Niculescu, but this was a match of many breaks of serve and South was up a break in the final set twice. Not the greatest of matches really, and although O'Brien is now in the semis, she hasn't really shown me terribly much in the matches where I have seen her.
