did any of you notice that lucy warburton not only got lucky loser(glad to see as only other brit in last round Q) and a foreigner didnt get it but in the main draw she faces the same opponent ranked 350 whom she lost to last round qualies 61 63. not sure wether thats a good thing or a bad thing. anyone? great to see georgie back
Katie O'Brien (GB)(1) bt Mel South (GB) 7-5, 6-2: "This was the most interesting match of the day, Mel led 3-0 1st set, Katie was making too many unforced errors at that point, did well to cut those down, increase her margins and make Mel work harder. Mel had problems with her wrist towards the end of the 1st set, she had to call the trainer for a while. It's frustrating for her as its been a recurring problem since Wimbledon. Mel started very well today but Katie upped her game and was able to keep continually applying the pressure to Mel. She has improved a huge amount in the past few months and has a lot of confidence at the moment."
Naomi Cavaday (GB)(3) bt Brittany Augustine (USA) 6-1, 6-1: "Naomi was impressive, but was always going to be too strong, as that American girl is only 16. Naomi did a very professional job, she's going along well. I'd really like to see either Katie or Naomi step up and win this tournament, Naomi has the tougher quarter-final, that will be a tricky match. Katie's opponent is very powerful, serves big and hits very heavy from the back."
Angelika Bachmann (Ger)(2) bt Anna Smith (GB) 6-1, 6-3: "Anna was disappointing today, she didn't play well, made a lot of errors, just going for too much too early."
"Looking back at some of the round 1 matches, it was great to see Georgie Stoop back after 6 months out. She played well to take the first set against Croatia's Petra Martic but lost the next too 6-1, 6-0...just generally a bit rusty and felt a bit out of sorts. Amanda Elliott really upped her game in the 2nd set, she had a chance to square the match at 1 set all, led 3-0 in the 2nd set tiebreak but her opponent (Justine Ozga) came through to take it 7-4. Tara Moore lost 6-3, 6-4 to France's Julie Coin who's ranked over 700 places higher at 201. Tara's performance was very encouraging, she's only 15 and a very talented player, just needs to get a little more disciplined in terms of shot selection and positioning around the ball."
Unfortunately Naomi lost 6-3, 7-6 to Germany's Sabine Lisicki today....Nigel said it was going to be a really tough one.
Lisicki is 18, ranked 250 but has made a 25K final and a 50K final this year plus numerous challenger quarters. She has a great record against Brits, beat Sarah Borwell 7-5, 6-4 in the States in Feb, beat Katie 6-4, 6-4 in Vancouver this summer and beat Mel 7-5 in the 3rd a few weeks ago.
Hopefully Katie can come through against the big hitting Czech girl who's been top 150 in singles but mainly focuses on doubles where she's 62 in the world, playing lots of WTAs. She won a 25k on clay earlier in the year....beat 7th seed Liana Ungur in rd1 here.
