Getting our team into the doubles shouldn't be too hard and would be really great, especially if they haven't played together before.
And singles qualies would be OK, the point isn't to get very far more to try and have a crash course in clay court tennis and so qualies may even be better, start against *relatively* easy opposition then build up to the Argentinian DC team, by which point they'll all love the red stuff and win the match 5-0 to GB (or have I got a little carried away? )

I don't think that the cut at Vina Del Mar will be too high even though it's the only event that week. It's DC the week after, so it's unlikely that too many people from Europe will head there for one week.
Imagine if Boggo qualifies and then draws Coria, who could be there with a wild card! That would give him a great chance of winning a main draw match.
It looks like VdM hasbeen getting a bit less popular over the years - recent cuts (including 2005 when Andy entered qualifying but had to pull out when he injured his back before the start) were as follows - M = MD, Q = qualifying (surprise!)
2003 - M 125 Q 722 2004 - M 123 Q 383 2005 - M 133 Q 319 2006 - M 157 Q unranked (16 byes in QR1)
2007 was a special case, because it was played as a RR event with no MDE round so there were just 24 players in the main draw, cut 136, and only a small qualifying event, cut 208.

GB on a shirt, Davis Cup still gleaming, 79 years of hurt, never stopped us dreaming ... 29/11/2015 that dream came true!
Britain will rely heavily on 20-year-old Andy Murray
Great Britain will have to overcome Argentina on clay after the hosts confirmed the venue for their Davis Cup World Group clash in February.
The first-round tie will take place at the 15,000-capacity clay-surfaced Parque Roca in Buenos Aires.
Britain are unseeded and face a daunting trip to third seeds Argentina.
John Lloyd's team qualified for the elite World Group for the first time since 2003 with a 4-1 win over Croatia in September.
Britain have not won a World Group tie since Lloyd, Jeremy Bates and Colin Dowdeswell defeated Spain in 1986.
Following Tim Henman's retirement, Britain will rely heavily on Andy Murray, who is the only player in Lloyd's team ranked in the world's top 100.
Argentina boast 11 top-100 players, including number nine David Nalbandian, number 15 Guillermo Canas, number 20 Juan Ignacio Chela and number 23 Juan Monaco.
The tie will be played on the weekend of 8-10 February.
the only place for decision is really boggo v baker. lets face who ever steps onto that court wont be expected to win. i think jl prefers baker, but i think boggo will play better.
if the match was v someone like okun etc i would say jamie, but alex has a habit of raising his game more (i'm not suggesting enough to win here) which will be better for us.

Regarding the choice of squad....has to be Boggo over Baker for the 2nd rubber. As Count says, JL does like Baker's attitude a lot, he's got a brilliant mentality towards the game and as Gilbert says "a lot of heart." However, he doesn't possess Boggo's raw talent and shot-making ability and for that reason you have to go with Boggo. I cant see either of them winning a rubber (probably against Nalbandian and Canas/Chela) but who knows...if Boggo has an absolute blinder and his opponent is a bit off he's the one who'd have the more chance of taking advantage....I doubt Baker's absolute best would be enough to get near to winning a set against any of those 3 on clay
Would take Aucks and James Ward as hitting partners. Ward competes a lot on the clay and the experience of training on it with that class of player would benefit him a heck of a lot....also having hit with JCF in the past, he'd be a decent hitting partner for the guys. Bloomfield would benefit more by playing indoor challengers for those 2-3 weeks
Interesting article, I hadn't even thought of the Britain v. Argentina Faulklands aspect. But the language in that article did make me chuckle, particularly the idea of a "reconnaissance trip" to choose hotels
