Well done Jamie, and it has been a great start for the Brits so far.
I could see it slipping away from him when he got broken the first time he served for the match, and then faced break point the second time, but he managed to get it together and serve it out to get the win
Great chance for him to qualify now with Sluiter out, as there is no-one he should fear in his section now, and if I had to bet on it, I would say that Jamie would qualify
Zverev going out opens it up a lot for Bloomers as well, so he has a chance to qualify as well. Schwank is primarily a clay courter, but did just make 2 challenger finals in south America so is definately in form at the moment
Hopefully Boggo and the girls can follow these two and win their first matches as well, and make it a clean sweep into round 2
(and seeing all the q vs. q matches in the main draw, a serious incentive for the Brits to do well, as I wouldn't find seeing Baker vs. Boggo (or something like that) in round 1, as it would mean a Brit in round 2, with them getting 50 points)
When was the last time we got 3 Brits through rd1 of a slam qualies ?
We only got 2 through at the Aussie open this year didn't we? (mackin and marray)
Guessing Wimbledon last year may be the best guess, as I'm sure Delgado qualified, and a couple of others may have won a round
EDIT: After searching, the answer is US Open 2005, when Murray, Parmar and Marray all won their opening matches (Sherwood, Hilton, Delgado and Bogdanovic all lost as well... 7 Brits in qualifying, we need to get back to those days, and hopefully with the juniors, and players like Morgan Phillips we can do so)
yes in Wimbledon 2006, Goodall qualified but it was only him and Fleming who made rd2.
lol, those were the days in US Open 2005 !! Was the one and only time though that we've had 7 Brits in the main draw of an overseas slam qualies since I started following tennis
Is it raining in NY ? or has the scoreboard just packed up
Baker v Mertinak - Mertinak is ranked 175 and is aged 27. Played mostly on clay this year but had impressive win over Sluiter 6-3, 6-4 in opening round.
Baker for me should win this on American hard courts.
Bloomfield v Schwank - The unfortunate named South American has had some great results this year in Futures events and is only 21 with a ranking of 196. Very impressive win over Zverev in 1st round 6-2, 6-4
This could be a struggle for Bloomers given his recent form but by no means a terrible draw
