Week 34 - WTA Tier 2 Pilot Pen Tennis - New Haven, CT, USA

Anyone See Naomi is in the qualifying draw at new haven she plays Tzipora Obziler(94) in rnd1 second on court 1 does this mean she won't be trying to qualify for the womens us open singles?

She'll still play US Open qualifying unless she makes the 2nd round of the main draw.

I believe that she is allowed to do both. She just needs to go out of the main draw of this before the USO qualies draw is made.

At least that's the case in men's tennis. It's possible that there is some other rule in WTA.

Edit: Didn't see jamatthews's post.

I hope she picks up her form after a ngihtmare last week at 50K Bronx. I'd like to see her make the main draw of New Haven...I'm conflicted as to whether I'd prefer to see her do well in New Haven and make an impact or do reasonably well in New Haven and play US Open qualies....let's see what happens I guess. Her potential second round opponent is Julia Vakulenko who ended Kim Clijsters career.

I don't think that she'll mind missing the USO qualies if she makes the second round! I would rather have that, unlikely as it is.

Welcome to the brotherhood, Brian.

Naomi is a set and a break down. 6-3 *1-0. Her first serve is letting her down, hopefully she will put in a credible performance.

Let's hope Naomi can step up a gear in her next match (btw I am really glad that she applied for a WC, it's good to see her entering main tour events).

She has to win another two matches to make the main draw.

Her first round win has earned her 5pts, if she wins again she will have 10pts and 15pts if she qualifies.

She has earnt over $1000 for her win, though obviously tax will take away a lot.

I think Vakulenko has withdraw as Jorgelina Cravero is out on court against Nathalie Vieren from Italy. This really ups Naomi's chances of qualifying as Julia Vakulenko was potentially a VERY tough encounter.

Speaking to Naomi tonight:

She said that the first set was very competitive, just the one break to Obziler...but then she (Naomi) started to take control in the 2nd, loosening up and hitting out more. Then Obziler pulled a muscle in her calf and had to retire.

She got this wildcard through IMG, it was great as wildcards into US main tour events are really difficult to get, even through qualies. After the US Open, she plans to head to the Far East and play a series of WTAs there...the weak Tier 3 and Tier 4s
