Group C There were no major upsets in today's round robin matches in Group C. No.5 seed Great Britain defeated Argentina, with Laura Robson (GBR) and Jessica Ren (GBR) winning their singles ties with scores of 6-0 6-3 & 6-2 6-0 respectively, making the doubles tie a dead rubber as they achieved an unassailable 2-0 lead.
AND the Boys, slightly better,
Second seed Australia had a difficult start when Ben Wagland (AUS) succumbed to the powerful game of Andrew Bettles (GBR). Jason Kubler(AUS) was victorious with a perfect 60 60 to equalize the tie. In the decisive doubles, Kubler led his partner Joey Swaysland to a clear 62 62 victory, so that Australia and Chile will go into tomorrows matches as the leading teams of the group.
Group C Third seed Russia and fifth seed Great Britain won their ties against Argentina and India in convincing manner. This sets up, similarly to group B, a clash between two unbeaten nations for the victory of the group on Wednesday.
The second tie in Group D saw Chile take on Great Britain. Ivan Conejero (CHI) gave Chile a perfect start with a 6-0 6-2 victory over Andrew Bettles (GBR). Britain's no.1 George Morgan levelled the tie in the second singles match before the Chileans sealed victory in the deciding doubles match. Having now won twice, the unseeded Chileans will play Australia to decide the outright winners of Group D.
Group C Third seeds Russia played Great Britain today on TK Prostejovs excellent Centre Court in this top of the group clash. Both teams brought perfect records into this deciding encounter.
However, Russia maintained their 100% record with a victory for Daria Gabrilova (RUS) 6-4 6-3, over Laura Robson (GBR). Britains No.1 Jessica Ren (GBR) was unable to draw the tie level in the second singles match, losing to the Russian No.1 Kseniya Krillova (RUS) 6-3 6-4. Gabrilova & Kirillova (RUS) then completed the victory with a 7-5 6-2 victory in the doubles. The victory meant Russia became the first team to book a spot in the semifinals with 3 wins and without losing a single match. Great Britain finish second in Group C and play off for 5th to 8th place.
Boys
A nail biting tie took place at the other venue across the road. It was the battle of the 7th seeded team France against Great Britain. In what was the longest tie of the day, Andrew Bettles put the British team ahead by winning 10 to 8 in the third set over Sebastien Boltz (FRA). Cedrick Commin levelled the tie with a straight set victory. The decisive doubles finished 11 to 9 in the third set in favour of the French team, which leaves Great Britain playing in the 13-16th playoff, together with Canada, India and Belarus.
The girls lost to an older team, so it's nothing bad. They'll have a good chance of winning the thing next year if we play a full team, which'll consist of Jessica, Robson and someone else - probably Joanna Henderson.
Thanks for updating all the scores, John. I was busy for the last three days as I was trying out for my college's footie team (and I didn't get selected ).
