Illingworth was serving for the match at 5-4 when i left.
Coelho won 6-2 in the third i think, took my eye off that one.
Mathew James kept breaking back in the first set and led 6-5 had 2 set points on La Portes serve then kind of went away. Hes got a killer backhand down the line. When it was on it almost always won the point. Shot of the championship came from Mathew, on the run he hit this amazing forehand down the line that was like a squash shot sheer brilliance.
Slabinsky vs Berwer was a marathon, every point almost was a huge, long rally. Brewer led 5-3 in the third and served for the match. Got to 30all. In the breaker Slaba went 6-2 up. Brewer came back to 6-5 then on the 4th MP Slaba hit and ace which most of the people watching thought was well long. A few of the guys where sitting by the serving line and all went 'Ooohhh auch' Most people thought it was a bad call but Slaba got the win.
Rice was very impressive but Priddle made a lot or errors long on the baseline most of the time. Rice serve seemed pretty big.
Illingworth Milton was a battle and a half. Milton is strange in that his forehand can be huge at times but his backhand is just a rallyign shot.
Its just a pity that Kasiri withdrew, freeing up the LL space. Not a pity for THornley but Kasiri could possibly have won this title.
What makes you think that it was Kasiri's withdrawal that let in Thornley? According to the draw sheet I printed off earlier today, he actually replaced the third seed, Fred Hemmes (NED/376)...
The outstanding results from Wrexham aren't getting any better from a Brit perspective, either: still no formal confirmation of the Allinswon/Coelho, Wire/Hewitt & Milton/Illingworth encounters, but Thornley lost to King-Turner 1 & 1 ( ), Brassington to Ysern 1 & 3 ( ) &, for the sake of completeness thus far, Feeney beat Lustig 6-4 7-6(3) (winner plays Milton or Illingworth) & Ianuzzi beat Colenbrander 2 & 5...
So 7 Brits progress....and another pt for Milton !!!
Not to mention the acid test: not one of those seven faces a fellow Brit in the second round tomorrow! What's the betting that most, if not all, will have succumbed to the alien invasion of these shores, come this time tomorrow, which means none of 'em in the QFs? Yeah, I know, "oh ye of little faith", but be honest, they don't exactly perform sufficiently well, or at any rate sufficiently well consistently, to justify any faith, do they? I, for one, ain't holding my breath...
