Wow, what an impressive win Bally must be on fire atm, never thought it'd be that emphatic ! She can go really deep here, playing this way
3 British girls through to challenger quarters so far this week. Hopefully Anne can make it 4 in her rd2 match later this evening. She plays Aussie Monique Adamczak who's ranked 200. She played Anne in the juniors back in 1999, winning 6-3, 6-2. Last week she reached the WTA Cincinnatti main draw, losing 6-2, 7-5 to Schynder in rd1. She's at her best on the slow and medium paced surfaces - made a series of challenger semis and quarters in the USA and Italy this spring. Got a wc into the Aussie Open beating a qualifier 1 and 4 before losing to Kuznetsova
The name of this tournament is 'Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships'. How weird!
Aha!
Fifth Third's unusual name is the result of the June 1, 1908 merger of two banks, The Fifth National Bank and The Third National Bank, to become The Fifth Third National Bank of Cincinnati. Because the merger took place during a period when prohibitionist ideas were gaining popularity, it was believed that "Fifth Third" was better than "Third Fifth," which could be construed as a reference to three "fifths" of alcohol. The name went through several changes over the years, until on March 24, 1969, the name was changed to Fifth Third Bank.
Sheddie wrote:Nice win for Bally though not the most testing of rd1 matches, Frazier was an unranked 17 year old wildcard. What's her record in the US hard court season been like in previous years ? How well has she done in USO qualies ?...don't think she's reached final round yet, hopefully that can be rectified this summer.
Her record on US hard courts has been poor, unlike Anne. In fact this QF is her best ever result. I have checked her US Open record, and she has only once won a match (2004)
