been raining all day up there, play has only just started...guess they might be able to get 2 matches in this evening
I wonder why they didn't move it indoors...more than enough courts up there
Given that this is a grass tournament then I'd hope they'd make every effort to get all the matches played on grass. Clearly they have to be pragmatic, but it's been dry here for a couple of hours now and should remain light for another 2 at least .
Does anyone know what kind of commitment a tournament has to honour regarding maintaining the official surface? I'm thinking back to the ATP here last month when Gasquet was rather upset at having to play indoors (rather ungracious in that case i thought; it has rained a lot and they did give him a birthday cake). but would a player ever have a real case if they thought a decision to move indoors was completely unjust?

Well wasn't Manchester played indoors last week except one day?
ATP rule VI cover for this - Moving Indoors at an Outdoor EventCase: Rain has disrupted play to the point where the event is in danger of not being completed. There are indoor courts availablefor use. May the Supervisor move the matches indoors to completethis event?Decision: Yes. Under the responsibilities of the Supervisor it states that "the Supervisor may, if necessary to eliminate the possibilityof a player having to play two singles matches in one day,or if necessary to complete the event, move a match to anothercourt, indoors or outdoors, regardless of surface". The exceptionto this is if the Tournament Director demonstrates to theSupervisor that there will be a detrimental impact on the successof the tournament if singles or doubles matches are playedindoors. In this case, the Supervisor may elect to keep all matches for outdoor play. (ATP Policy)
Wow, just shows how well Miles did against Juska ! Back spasms is a bit worrying but not as much as if it had been a knee or wrist injury or a recurrence of the shoulder problem. I guess that he'll have to take a couple of weeks off but it should have cleared up by then
Really disappointing result for Bloomers, thought he'd go deep in one of these grass challengers after the Hewitt performance. However, to be fair, Petzschner is really on form atm, beat Dupuis in Manchester last week and it looks like it was a really close one.
Maybe the LTA saw Bloomers' interview with GQ this month, had him neutered and it's affecting his game

True but when it's been raining consistently for 6 hours since 11 o clock you would have thought they'd have moved it indoors (as often happens in Manchester) for the sake of the players. Now two of them will have to play 2 matches on one day unless there's more rain, which is a bit unfair.
With Gasquet, as well as the surface change I think he was also disconcerted by the lifeless atmosphere indoors (not surprising considering the spectator facilities there are dire) compared to the large crowds they get on the grass. For someone used to competing in big arenas it must have been a bit off-putting.
That wouldn't have been a factor in this tourney where the 'crowds' are the proverbial 'one man and a dog' each day
Still raining and no chance of going indoors as the british wheelchair event is using them. They may get to play this afternoon..forecast to dry later.
