Not a good day for us Brits in Nottingham today! The results are up on the ATP site & there are no survivors in the first round singles matches to provide moral support for Childs & Bloomers, who won yesterday, while Hooshyar & Kinsella beat Allinson & Slabba 6-4 5-7 [12-10] (a ding-dong battle, by the look of it! ) in the all-Brit encounter in the doubles & Goody & Ghouse saw off Alcaide & Groth, also in three (5-7 7-6(5) [10-5] - another battle!), but Milton & Rice lost to Klein & Raja 5 & 2 & Bourgeois & Childs lost to Charroin & Oger 7-6(3) 6-7(3) [7-10]. At least the latter put up a fight...
Childs now faces the 8th seed Meffert who made the final of the Scheveningen challenger two weeks ago. In Manchester he lost in 3 sets to Bopanna in rd2. They've played twice before, though both matches were in the juniors.Childs won 6-1, 6-4 at junior Wimbledon 1999 !
Bloomfield plays Germany's Phillipp Petzschner who knocked out big serving Swede Ryderstedt 7-5, 6-1 today. He's having a great month, made a challenger final on German clay and reached the quarters in Manchester last week. Petzschner has a great game for grass, he's top 100 in doubles.
Both matches which could go either way but against in-form opposition I fear it could be doubles or bust come this time tomorrow
hese challengers have illustrated the paucity of players we currently have on the mens side at challenger level. With Boggo and Marray injured and Baker in the States, just Bloomfield, Goodall and Childs have a realistic chance of winning a few rounds. A couple of years ago we had around 16 players in the top 500 but this is now down to just 8 due to retirements (Parmar, Lee, Mackin, Hilton, Banks, Sherwood, Fleming), players deciding to focus just on doubles (Auckland and Delgado) plus Matt Smith who's been unlucky with injuries and form. After the top 300 guys there's few players looking likely to make the breakthrough to challenger level in the near future. Childs has been top 300 in the past and definately has the ability to get back there, he's had a great grass season and hopefully those results will give him the necessary confidence boost (aswells as the dosh to buy a new bandana !). Further down, the likes of Miles Kasiri, Morgan Phillips (though currently out with a knee injury) and James Ward have made some big progress in the past 12 months plus there's a number of promising juniors who are starting to get their first ranking points, winning matches in 15Ks. However, it will probably take another couple of years for these guys to make the breakthrough.
To add sth, personally I think Bloomfield has a chance today with Petzschner, he is far more experienced on grass and overally a better tennis player. I expect a tough game but he should take this one.
