SEGO, Nicholas vs GARCIA-VILLANUEVA, Carlos (ESP) WHITE, Oliver vs CALDERON-RODRIGUEZ, Carlos [14] (ESP) BROOKS, Richard [7] vs SALA-BORDALLO, Gil (ESP) RAMBOTAS, John vs TOMAS-NAVARRO, Fernando (ESP) BARLOW, Philip [12] vs GARCIA-ROMAN, Marc (ESP) LEVI, Benjamin George vs MUGURUZA, Miguel (ARU)Five face Spanish opposition whilst Ben Levi gets to face Aruba's number 1
Brooks and Barlow are both in the same section, which means that 1 of them has to be a favourite to qualify here. Barlow could play Rambotas in round 2 as well, so a decent chance for a Brit to make it here
Disappointing to see Robert Dee isn't playing... maybe he has a WC somewhere?
Richard Brooks is playing after ages! I guess that this is just a one off event. Gandia is pretty close to Benidorm, where Jankovic is based.
I don't know what kind of publicty Richard got during Wimbledon, but in case you didn't know, this is what he looks like (link nicked off predrag on WTAW) -
SEGO, Nicholas lost to GARCIA-VILLANUEVA, Carlos (ESP) 6-2 3-0 Ret WHITE, Oliver lost to CALDERON-RODRIGUEZ, Carlos [14] (ESP) 6-0 6-3 BROOKS, Richard [7] beat SALA-BORDALLO, Gil (ESP) 6-3 6-1 RAMBOTAS, John beat TOMAS-NAVARRO, Fernando (ESP) 6-0 6-3 BARLOW, Philip [12] beat GARCIA-ROMAN, Marc (ESP) 6-1 6-4 LEVI, Benjamin George lost to MUGURUZA, Miguel (ARU) 3-6 6-4 7-6(4)
Three Brits make it through to second qualifying round - all in the same section of the draw Brooks plays Alcorta-Olarra (ESP) whilst Barlow plays Rambotas
Good chance for Phillip to pick up another point here, as he has got a pretty decent draw against someone with only 1 ranking point. Would be nice to see him come away from this tour on Spain with something, as he has had some decent results in the qualifying competitions
I posted this before in a Spanish Week 23 Futures thread...
So who is Phillip Barlow ?
He has just turned 19 (Sunday) and is male. Thats a start at least.
He has two world ranking points...make that 3 now...and only starting playing futures in 2006.
He is from Singleton, Lancashire, Great Britain. He is 1.78m tall (5'10") and only 60kg. Thats from his ITF profile...surely he must be heavier than that !!!
In singles he is 15 wins 20 losses in Futures and Futures qualies.
He has an LTA ranking of 3.1. He is 494th on the national rankings...same as Robert Dee LOL
The LTA stuff is not very indicative of his ability so that is just a bit of fun.
This is Philip pictured with his parents when he was 16 attending the Sanchez-Casal academy. I presume he is still there.
That's a terrible draw for Barlow. Machado was a Challenger level player but missed nearly a full year with an injury. He could take the title out here.
