Ok sorry for the delay in these - bloody meetings!!! Here are the results so far: Quershi bt Evans 6-2 6-1 Meffertt bt Ward 6-1 6-3 Goodall bt Wessells 7-5 Ret Bursgmuller bt Sirianni 6-2 6-7 6-3
So at least we have one man into round 2. Childs and Delgado on as we speak
Well done to Goodall, though I also hope that Wessels is OK, it's never good to see someone having to retire.
I'll second both those remarks, but would add that, with the 6th seed out of his way, now is surely the perfect chance for Josh to show what he's really made of & to start making his critics eat their words: he must stand some sort of a chance of beating Harel Levy to reach the QFs, given that he is the slightly more highly ranked player, ( ) & there I imagine he would meet the 4th seed, Antony Dupuis, although Riccardo Ghedin proved to be quite a dangerous player in Felixstowe last week! No idea how good a grass court player Dupuis is...
Unfortunately, Dupuis is a very good grass court player. This year, he qualified for s'Hertogenbosch and reached the semis, including a win over Ben Becker in the quarters.
He then qualified for Newport, beating Lee Childs before reaching the second round with a win over Economidis. He went out in the second round but not before taking Mahut to three sets.
I honestly can't see Josh troubling Dupuis on grass.

And that's not to mention the fact that last year he beat Rusedski (through retirement though) at Queen's before reaching the semis here in Manchester and then winning Nottingham, beating a certain Josh Goodall 6-3 6-2 along the way. And that was with Josh in great form after his run to the final in Manchester the previous week.

Not the best of weeks as far as the singles go.Is there any news on the doubles from today?
Sadly, the Manchester tailspin continues: the only remaining Brit interest there is courtesy of the Dickson boys. They play the Aussie pair, Coelho & Feeney, who put out the top seeds, Burgsmüller & Levy, for a place in the SFs... Don't fancy their chances!
RobC Wrote .....to an extent, yes, but if you're a player and you want to be the best, and you have the opportunity, surely you go up to a Murray, a Henman, a Gilbert and you ask them what they do to beat people, you read Brad's book, you note what the top guys do and you copy them, you ask your coach why he's not teaching you this.
To be honest I think that the above is just laughable & I take it as an insult. I work in performance, with some top juniors & I know for a fact that each & every player who has the slightest future at a professional level are given the correct pre & post match routines i.e warming up, cooling down, stretching, eating & showering. Part of this is scouting potential opponents & to make notes or mental notes but to be honest you can get just as much information from guys in the locker room on opponents as you will always know somebody who has played your potential opponent/s. To say that the losses do not hurt enough is unfair on the boys also, they have given up much of their childhood to be where they are & haven't done so to be ranked 1000ATP, they want to reach the top & any losses hurt & hurt deeply but they have been trained to pick out what needs to be improved as well as positives & move onwards & upwards. That being said they are also realistic & know that winning matches at challenger level is a tall order, when the whole idea of the exercise is to gain match experience at such a high level at this stage. In order for us to produce results & players we need to stop looking at totally useless points & realise that when it comes to this level of competition all the players have had the right training & imput but ultimately it is up to them to deliver on & off court & stop needing coaches to hold their hand & just stand on their own 2 feet & be professional..... which I believe our top juniors are currently doing like never before.
