Week 28 - Newport ATP

Qualies draw:

Only Lee Childs made the trip over:

QR1:

Lee Childs (Gbr) WR408 vs David Martin (USA) WR658

Full draw

The winner of the match above plays (3)Antony Dupuis (Fra) WR224 who received a bye in round 1.

Yes folks, there were SEVEN byes in qualifying for a main tour event.

We should have a number of players playing in the doubles event - Booty has already said that he's playing with Ross Hutchins here, Aucks should put in an appearance and Delgado could well turn up.

Why on earth did no more Brits go over, I wonder.

Shame but with 2 Challengers in UK coming up it's a long way to go for maybe only 1 match.

Childs match should be complete, Evans match is on livescore, and he was scheduled to be on after Lee, but I can't find a result anywhere.

I know, but a chance to play one of the weakest ATP-level events, and on grass - I'm surprised more haven't taken it up.

At least Lee made the trip, so good luck to him, and hopefully he can do well and qualify here

As for the rest of the Brits... yes, you may only play 1 match, but there is no-one in that draw that you wouldn't think Bloomers, Goodall, Marray and Baker woudln't have had a chance against, and with a good draw all 4 of them could have qualified

Would have liked to have seen Auckland in the draw as well, as he could have qualified for this, and if Hutchins is playing here, then he may as well as played in the singles, as you never know what will happen

It does seem kinda strange that more Brits did not make the trip. Brits play a lot on grass and have done well here in the past. Greg has won this event twice, Martin Lee made the finals five or so years ago, Boggo played well, I think it might be a mistake, although coming over for one match could be a real mistake too.

I just can't think of too many ATP tour events with such a weak field and so the chance to pick up some easy points and $$$$, but hey what do I know?

all the top brits would have had a great chance of qualifying here - they would have all been decent seeds and surface should generally suit their games!

ultimately if they want to go forward, they have to take themselves out of their comfort zones and tak a risk or 2!

an opportunity missed i think!

Main Draw

(1)FISH, Mardy USA vs QUALIFIER
QUALIFIER vs QUALIFIER
(WC)ISNER, John USA vs NORMAN, Dick BEL
GUCCIONE, Chris AUS vs (8)BERRER, Michael GER

(3)LLODRA, Michael FRA vs BOZOLJAC, Ilia SRB
BRACCIALI, Daniele ITA vs (WC)JENKINS, Scoville USA
QUALIFIER vs ECONOMIDIS, Konstantinos GRE
GARCIA, Adrian CHI vs (5)MAHUT, Nicolas FRA

(7)KUNITSYN, Igor RUS vs ZVEREV, Mischa GER
BOGDANOVIC, Alex GBR vs UDOMCHOKE, Danai THA
KIM, Kevin USA vs DANCEVIC, Frank CAN
PEYA, Alexander AUT vs (4)SANTORO, Fabrice FRA

(6)GABASHVILI, Teimuraz RUS vs KARANUSIC, Roko CRO
MOODIE, Wesley RSA vs ALVES, Thiago BRA
(WC)KIEFER, Nicolas GER vs CAPDEVILLE, Paul CHI
GIMELSTOB, Justin USA vs (2)SPADEA, Vincent USA

Umdomchoke shouldn't pose much of a problem in round 1...

Kunitsyn has done nothing on grass, and will probably lose to Zverev. Zverev has a good game on grass, but hasn't found any of the form that got his playing well last year, and Alex beat him at Shrewsbury, so hopefully he can built on that

Kim, Peya, Dancevic aren't the most difficult QF opponents, while Santoro is still playing at Wimbledon, so I could see him withdrawing

Looking at that draw... it is not out of the question for Alex to easily make a SF... then probably a returning Kiefer for a place in the final...

He will never have a better chance to make an ATP final, as he has been given a gift of a draw

Wouldn't be so certain of it being Kiefer in the semi. Wes Moodie is more than capable on a surface so suited to serve and volleying and Gimelstob is a big guy with a big serve.

Still, Boggo is a live contender in his section. I wouldn't make him a strong favourite to make the quarters like you seem to be doing, but he definitely has a good chance. Once there, I think Dancevic would probably beat him, but hopefully Alex can overcome him.

Let's just see how he goes in this first round before we look too far ahead.

As for Lee Childs if he were to make the main draw, the Qualifier v Qualifier looks very tasty and I don't think he'd mind Economidis too much. The only bum draw would be number 1 seed Mardy Fish.

3 Brits in the doubles draw:

(1)Moodie/Santoro vs (wc)Amritraj/Qureshi
Healey/Kunitsyn vs Peya/Zverev
(4)Gimelstob/Perry vs Ratiwatana/Ratiwatana
Jamie Delgado/Dick Norman vs Dancevic/Parrott

Gabashvili/Rojer vs Lipsky/Martin
Eric Butorac/Ross Hutchins vs (3)Llodra/Mahut
(wc)Fish/Isner vs Alex Bogdanovic/Vince Spadea
Guccione/Huss vs (2)Kerr/Thomas

Looks like Aucks has decided to spend another week at home before the hard court season starts.

I'm surprised that both Santoro and Llodra were allowed to enter even though they are both playing at Wimbledon today.

Lee trailed 5-2 in the first set, but managed to pull it back to a tiebreak.

Which he lost 7-4.

However, he broke first game of the second set and is currently about to serve at *2-1
