Boggo v Gucci

thats a big shame for boggo, gutted as i thought he could go places this year at wimbledon! seemed just to meet a form player.

However I still can't help slightly thinking that if he has aspirations of establishing himself in the top 100, these are the kinds of matches he really has to be winning. ok the other chap played well but maybe mix things up a bit more, try to put him off his rhythm etc. ultimately alex is still to break his grand slam duck and that has to change soon if he wants to be on the atp tour.

anyway, hope he can do well in newport where a good run, which he has the ability for, can see him break the top 100.

Alex may have played well and Guccione may have been on form but you have to remember that only last week Jamie Baker beat the big Aussie at Nottingham. He actually won the second set 6-1 completely negating Gucciones big serve.

I watched the Nottingham match and the big difference was that Jamie went after the Aussies second serve and was rewarded by getting inside his head to such an extent that his serve broke down. Guccione won 75% points on his second serve today.

I suspect that the reason G isn't ranked higher is that he is not quite as mentally tough as some of the the other players and hence is not quite as consistent.

Alex did OK today but was too passive and did not do enough to sieze but the initiative. After 6 losses in the first round, (obviously all as Wild Cards) I suspect that that this is also becoming a burden and he may well have a good run if (sorry, when) he gets past the first round

Well, hes got a QF points to defend at Newport, so he may make the top 100 by reaching the final or even winning it.

i was really disappointed by his performance, just when i thought he may use the Roddick's match as a confidence booster for his performances at Nottingham and Wimbledon, its seems he lacking the mental strength once again. Or then again, maybe if Peter was there, he may have played it differently. im sorry to say this, but it is a MASSIVE blow for boggo, to not have peter's services for the US hardcourt season, where hes got the chance to break into the top 100. Peter gave him the confidence to perform well against roddick, and just because of the pathetic LTA excuse, he had to be suspended from his job! furious.gif

I think you're being a bit unfair Robxon: Strikes me that this was Guccione playing at his best: and we all know what happens when a Karlovic (or Ivanisovic or Rusedski) does that: not many can stand in his way.

I was incredibly impressed with the way that Boggo kept pulling Aces, unreturnables, passes, lobs (especially!) and other winners out of his hat: even 2 sets and a break down, he kept at it: that shows loads of mental strength in my book.

The match reminded me of the Henman - Philippousis semi- final from all those years ago: Henman on great form, doing nothing wrong, but Philipoo just "in the zone" and playing a perfect, heavy - serving match.

Alex wasnt too down after the match, i think he knows he played well. He didnt get tight (well maybe on a few points) like we have seen it the past, which imo is a positive sign for the future, esp for davis cup. i had a really worry that alex was going to go out there and cramp up.

Compare after alex lost the GGL match he was furious and went in his silent zone for half an hour or so, which he does after bad loses (like he did against kim at wimby 05).

one thing i find is that alex never really gets the support of the home crowd. yes ozzies are normally noisey, but it strange, is it cause alex had quite a quiet on court persona or is it due to his surname?

i do think alex needs to 'big it up' a bit on court somethimes tho.

They surely should have put Boggo v Guccione on a bigger court - there is nothing the hordes of Aussies with ground passes like better than an AUS v GB match and they seemed to be outnumbering the Brits inside.

I tried to get in after the Marray match ended and it was impossible for about a set. In addition, all standing room on the hill above was packed 2 or 3 deep and there were pairs of eyes (mine included for a while) all along the bottom of the fence at the points where you could see the action through the crowd. And this at almost 8 in the evening after quite a lot of people had gone home for the day!

On the face of it, this was a very disappointing result, but Gucci's serve seemed to be virtually unreturnable. Hard to tell whether it really was, or whether Alex made it look that way by not gettign to many of them, if you see what I mean, but I think probably the former. Either way, The Aussie was clearly on top form.

Guccione served too well for Boggo in the end, but at least he put up a decent fight in this match

Boggo continues with his struggles in the tie breaks by making a couple of errors which he couldn't afford to do against a big server, and then played a poor game in the second set which cost him the serve.

Disappointing for him to go out in round 1 again, but he will surely get some luck with the draw at some point in a grand slam. He needs a very good result in Newport now if he wants to remain in with a chance of direct entry to the US open

Davydonkey came from 2-0 down to beat Guccione. Difference between a class player and Boggo perhaps...

I didn't want to complain about the Brits lack of luck with the draw this year coz it seems I always do but if Boggo had got Hyung Taik Lee's draw he could genuinely have made R4 this week.

I still think he would get more confidence and match practice as 9th (ish) seed in qualies, winning three matches, therefore scoring some points anyway, and then he's more likely to hit the ground running which against someone like Guccione may have put doubts in the guys head.

bascily davy found a way to win the 3rd set TB and i think Gucci serve was starting to tire, (plus i guess gucci maybe got a bit tight, being on the verge of beating a top tenner has that effect on people, rember alex v roddick).
If Alex could have dragged the match out a bit longer i think he could have found a way though. shame for him gucci came up with 2 blistering return winners to break, when alex had been serving very well, i think gucci only hit 1 more ace than Alex. (although the match would have probably been suspended til the next day then so gucci could have recovered)

the problem for alex would be going into the wimby qualies would mean missing Notts too, and altough he lost 1st rd there he has had sucess at notts in the past.

I still think there are signs of improvment from alex's play, as long as he keeps it up the break through will come. lol i know it will!!

Gutted that Boggo lost although you can see the improvement
in his game. I wish he'd won a round at Nottingham to lift him
further than 108. He's so close to the top 100 now, but, if he
goes out early at Newport and loses his points from last year
he may slip back again. Hope not because under Lundgren he
really has moved on and now is the time to crack the top 100
and mix with the big players.
