some good play by alex, but cant save the set. big g has to be one of the best volleyers have seen. his touch volleys are amazing!

yeah, he is just a machine...able to come up with the goods on all the key pts....touch at the net is spectacular...

also I was told that he was not that good from the baseline but he can really tee off on the forehand at times and the backhand is pretty solid too....how is this guy only ranked 95 ??   by that I mean, how come he doesn't win atp matches on other surfaces...he has a good record down under in the Aussie atps so can clearly play on hard and he should be able to rack up pts in the indoor season

true it has been a top quality performance from Gucci, that drop volley on the stretch was just top class.....I've probably been a bit unfair to him in my comments....just getting really frustrated as there are soo many ppl in this draw Alex could have beaten and watching Gucci serve for 2 and a half sets now is starting to p*ss me off

ok alex, no more drop volleys, something you need to work on the practice courts tho.

love hold from Alex...I have been impressed with his serving in this match, a lot of cheap pts gained and some big serves at key times

alex wimby nightmare continues. didnt really do much wrong gucci just played a perfect match, why can alex get someone who actaully plays a bad match against him at wimby?

i am sure alex will get slated for another loss, but that is no way deserved, cant have helped his mood having lundi dropped b4 the match either. but i think generally alex play was good. he got a few bp's against that massive serve, didnt take any, but didnt really get any in to play as such.

gucci could do well here if he can keep serving like that

so Gucci wins 7-6, 6-4, 6-4....tbh Alex didn't do much wrong in that match (apart from the service game he lost in set 2), Guccione was simply too good, not many players would have beaten him on that form....if he plays like that I reckon he will take out Davydenko in rd2...the volleying was just impeccable, the touch volleys, the positioning of the volleys when on the stretch was just high class...he must have spent loads of time on those classic clay courts down under as a kid where you have to have a big serve and serve-volley because there's simply too slippy to stay at the back

I do feel really gutted for Alex, he really wants that breakthrough slam win and with a lot of other draws he would have got it...when I saw he was playing Guccione I thought it was ok because although he's a top class grass-courter...Alex likes playing serve-volleyers...however I didnt count on a performance like that !!!!

absolutely, why couldn't he have drawn one of the many clay-courters in this draw....been unlucky with his draws at Nottingham and Wimbledon...gets huge servers who play the big pts impeccably and at Nottingham Garcia-Lopez nearly made the semis, nearly beat Tursunov and Gucci will surely have a big run here playing like that

if he gets slated that will just be seriously out of order, any journalist who watched that match and knows anything about tennis would just have to admit that Guccione was too good....sadly Wimbledon always draws journalists who seem to know virtually nothing about tennis...the likes of table-tennis player Matthew Syed (who once slated some of the Brits for poor fitness and then admitted in the same article that he once cramped at table tennis - how unfit do you have to be to do that !!!)   and basically cop out with the easy option of just bashing the British players or slating Henman for "only getting to the semis"....I remember back in 2002 when Sampras, Agassi, Safin, all lost in rd2 and the headline the next day was "if you don't win it this year Tim, we'll never forgive you".....lol

it's now on to the US tourneys for Alex, pts to defend at Newport but after that there's virtually nothing till October so massive chance to rack up the pts and make top 100...tourneys like Los Angeles and Washington are a good opportunity for him to win a couple of rounds and so do that....

hopefully if he can get direct entry for all 4 slams next year, some decent slam draws will come up....really needs to get a DA for the Aussie Open and RG, on his two least favourite surfaces
