I would have thought it was a million....but maybe Arka's up on his electronics....a byte is a data variable you see

It sounds like a really great deal Arka... =]

Where are you from anyways?

Actually both very wrong answers. There are 1,000 bytes in a KILOBYTE. and 1,000 kb's in a megabyte.

That is actually not necessarily true either. In computers there are actually exactly 1,024 bytes in a kilobyte and 1,024 kilobytes in a megabyte. Therefore the answer I put was 1048576 which is 1,024 squared.

The answer he had was 1,000,000 exactly. Technically, this is not a wrong answer as such because mega means million and byte means byte. Both answers are correct. Or as wikipedia says:

The term remains ambiguous and it can follow any one of the following common definitions:

1. 1,000,000 bytes (10002, 106): This is the definition recommended by SI and IEC. This definition is used in networking contexts and most storage media, particularly hard drives, Flash-based storage, and DVDs, and is also consistent with the other uses of the SI prefix in computing, such as CPU clock speeds or measures of performance.

2. 1,048,576 bytes (10242, 220): This definition is most commonly used in reference to computer memory, but most software that display file size or drive capacity, including file managers also use this definition. See Consumer confusion (in the "gigabyte" article).

3. 1,024,000 bytes (1000×1024): This definition is used to describe the formatted capacity of USB flash drives and the "1.44 MB" 3.5 inch HD floppy disk, which actually has a 1440 KiB capacity, that is, 1,440×1,024 bytes, or 1,474,560 bytes.

Going by that, the question was not clear enough as to justify them marking us down as wrong and losing us the quiz. Thoughts?

As Arka has said there are 2^20 (1,048,576) bytes in a megabyte
[for those not familiar with the terminology 2^1 = 2, 2^2 (2 squared) = 4, 2^3 (2 cubed) = 8 etc]
There are 2^10 (1024) bytes in a kilobyte

John, 1024 squared is the same as 2^20. wink.gif

In the sense of the term, 'kilo' means 1000, but most file systems on computers use 1024.

Sorry, I misread it as 20 to the power of 2. I thought your answer was 400 lol. Well done Arka, spot on mate. So you would agree I was seriously wronged out of that quiz then lol.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about kilo. That's why I mean neither answer is technically wrong because gramatically speaking the term "mega" "byte" means "million" bytes. But in computer speak it means just slightly over a million bytes. WE WOZ ROBBED.

Very interesting John, never knew there were so many definitions - just read Wikipedia myself and seems like 2^20 is technically correct but 1,000,000 is what governments and agencies are trying to promote to make things 'easier'

Oh ok...so there's definitely no chance of any of us getting that channel then! Lol!

Out of interest...why the support for British tennis players?
