Fisher/Phillips! Good team but not good enough today with two men facing them!
Blog Part One....
My stupid sister told me to get the Bus to Hammersmith and walk round the houses to get there. Finally arrived at the front gate just before 11 to see Barons Court tube station 1 minutes walk from court 1 and made mental note to invent a scheme that made my sister unknowingly walk 4 miles for no reason to get her back.
Watched Muller vs Eaton from 5-4 Eaton through to the end of the tie-break which he lost. Eaton had two set poi nts in Mullers serev at 4-5 but they were both saved with big serves. Biggest thought about Eaton was that he's really become a man as compared to the pics we have of him from before. Possible the most physically imposing Brit I saw all day. Hope he can push on. Massive serve.
Pity I'm blogging 4 days late as can't remember exactly what I did next. Oh yeah, its come back to me. Found Court 1 and watched Goodall vs Tsonga. Managed to see the whole of sets 2 and 3. Tsonga looked the better player throughout, but Josh was slightly more aggressive in set two. Lundgren was chatting to a young guy and seemed a little exasperated at how Josh was "spraying it around" too much. (not a direct quote - don't want to get in trouble like Seagull! :laughing).
Tsonga's coach was making his own hawkeye style chart of every point on a a notepad. Dedication for you. Josh's head seemed down quite a lot and he had a good word with himself after nearly every point towards the end. Seemed gutted when he was walking back to the clubhouse. I commented to my brother in law that he probably lost that match when he saw the draw as he never really seemed to believe.
Next went to see what I could see, and thought I could see Flanagan playing with a maypole. Turned out to be Slabba vs Melo and I'd missed the first set which Melo won easily. Slabba played like a Tennis god in thesecond set and Melo had absolutely no answer to him, though he wasn't getting many first serves in either which clearly didn't help. Slabba looked really compact and aggressive, equally capable from the back or nearer the net. He was very outspoken about the points he lost, remonstrating with himself with sentences lie, NO, CROSS COURT and then practicing what he should have done. Was well on top and looked a much better player.
(As an aside, Bamford vs Healey was on the adjoining court so I turned round during changeovers. Bamford looked the better grass court player from the back and on return games but was really struggling to get his serving going. He was also very unimpressed with the line judges. Healey found a way to hold serev a couple of times - very big server - and took the first set. Bammy was getting very frustrated with the line calls by this stage and performed better in the second set but Healey just has too much.)
So Slabba vs Melo third set. This was a really weird set because Melo won it 6-1 but Slabba still looked a class apart the whole way through. Melo was getting more serves in, and suddenly his height and wingspan were making the difference. Seemed a similar height to Karlovic and was reaching volleys on both sides but was winning points off the frame, net cord etc...
Slabba was getting very frsutrated and started shouting in Ukrainian all the time. Stood next to his coach/father??? who just kept encouraging him and giving him the thumbs up but in the end frsutration won out and so did Melo. I was very impressed with Slabba thoughout and hope he can push on, because he definitely has the ability to make it to challenger level.
i wonder if boggo and safin will plsy their doubles? safin is still on court in his singles. seems strange scheudling with safin playing last then ment to play a doubles later?
