QF: (8) Matt Smith WR 751 v Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) WR 1055

This is Matt's first QF this year and he has struck it lucky, because his QF opponent is outside the top 1000 and only got through R2 because the no. 2 seeds retired.

I won't underestimate Yang, though. He is just 16, so must be very talented to have a ranking close to the top 1000.

He's had a fair few decent victories over a couple of Japanese and Indonesian players with the highest being ranked about 550. Most of the others have been around 800-1100 in the rankings.

Yang hasn't won a match this year either (he's had two matches on clay and lost them both)

QF: (8) Matt Smith  WR 751 lost to Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) WR 1055 by 1 & 0 ashamed

Matt's first QF this year and it looked like he had struck it lucky too, because his QF opponent was outside the top 1000 and only got through R2 because the no. 2 seed retired.

However, he fed Matt a breadstick followed by a bagel, a stunningly bad result. I wonder if Matt was unwell or something.

As Arka said, he shouldn't have been underestimated to be at that ranking at just 16. He could be anything, who knows how talented he will prove to be.
