Henman vs Gulbis - French Open R1

So its Henman vs Gulbis.

The veteran against the Grand Slam debutant.

Ernests is at a career high of 84 in the world rankings. He has emerged pretty fast and is definitely a prospect though I don't think hee'll come anywhere neat the likes of Nole/Andy/Monfils etc....

Reached ATP St Petersburg semis on Taraflex.

Won Heilbronn, Eckental and Besancon Challengers. I don't think any of them were on clay.

Tim plans to take care of his own game and work out Ernests on the day.

I'm going for Tim in 3. pray.gif

(please fell free to jazz up the poll. Sorry for the Big Brother bleh undertones)

I think that Ernests will be a brilliant player. Maybe not as good as Andy and Nole (but something tells me he will be top 5) but surely better than Monfils!

Can't see how he'll trouble Tim, though, as he isn't doing too well on Challengers on clay. I'm going for a comfortable three set victory to the Tiger.

Does the Beeb show this court? Anyone know? I'm guessing probably not but will check out the bbci coverage at that point just in case. (and probs get sucked into watched some other match when I really should be working!)

Uj- oh - no- one providing scores?

It's 4-3* Gulbis with Serve.

Tim's serving at 15-15*

- looks like his radar isn't quite there yet, but he's putting away some great serves and excellent winners when it is.

. It must be pretty difficult for Henman to come up against an unknown quantity when in a season when he has not shown much form.

--- From the BBC text - WTF - making excuses already. what do most tennis players do when they play players they dont know excatly?

yep - Gulbis looks like a very good player. Hopefully Tim can see him off over four/five sets, but he needs to get his serve working......

First set to Gulbis.

Tim 1*-2 down in the second. Ad Gulbis (Tim's saved 5 break points so far in this set. Gulbis hasn't given him a sniff of one furious.gif)

His first serve is improving slightly - at 40% from 33% earlier in the set.

Tim saves that break point and closes out the game. 2-2* Gulbis to serve.

Tim trails 6-4 6-3.

EG serving at *1-2 15-15

The Latvian is out playing Tim looking at the stats in all areas. EG has had twice as many BP chances and has taken more.

Total winners 28 to 14 in favour of the Latvian.

40-30 game

2-2

Tim looked out of match practice, and a bit too used to being beaten.

He desperately needs to get some games under his belt: My recommendation: a Surbiton Wildcard!
