Just had some info from Nigel Sears on yesterday's matches in Bournemouth:
He said that Amanda Elliott's recent improvement is down to her understanding more how to use her forehand and applying herself more to the task of winning. She's been working a lot withs Jens Gerlach (former coach of Anastasia Myskina) which has brought her on a lot. She's now got her first world ranking
Jade Curtis' match was very tight, she was 3-0 down in the 3rd but fought back, had chances at 4-4. She got to 0-30 on her opponent's serve and had chances to break but missed them. Just played a poor tiebreak in the end which cost her. She played a good match but then again, Amanda Elliott beat the same girl 4 and 0 today !
Naomi Broady was really impressive against Olivia Howlett.
He didn't see Olivia Scarfi but she was 3-0 up in the first set against Jessica Moore and 4-0 up in the 2nd but managed to lose both.
By the way I haven't posted info I got on previous rd1 results....
Amanda Carreras got outhit by her Russian opponent but that girl is on fire atm...great results this year so it was a really, really tough draw.
Laura Slater lost 0 and 4 to an Austrian junior Klaffner who's ranked 700ish....Laura didn't play her best match, too many errors but did well to get into the match and turn things around after a v one-sided first set....shed led 3-2 in the 2nd and did have pts to go 4-2 up but missed them.
Becki Fong outdid Warburton for consistency, bit surprising it was that one-sided as both train at Sutton and know each other's games well
Amanda started very strongly, winning 5 out of the first 6 games to take a 5-1 lead. She looked to be in total control of the set but failed to serve it out at the first time of asking, letting Riner back in. The Swiss girl closed the gap to 5-4 but this time Amanda held her nerve and served it out.
The second set was very close with both players holding until Amanda made the crucial breakthrough at 3-3, breaking to give herself a 5-3 lead. She served for the match at 5-4 and had 2 match points at 40-15. Riner was still battling and saved both but Amanda held firm, set up a 3rd opportunity and cooly converted it to book her place in the last 4.
Amanda now faces Italy's Elena Pioppo (who also came through qualifying) for a place in the final. 27 year old Pioppo is ranked 949 but has never been higher than 856. She also made a 10K semi in Egypt earlier this year and has beaten 2 Brits already this week - Amy Sargeant and Jessica Jackson. However, Olivia Scarfi outplayed her 6-1, 6-2 in Belgium at the beginning of April.
It's great to see Amanda converting her potential into points....she had some great results on South American clay during a junior tour earlier this year and it's good to see her doing the same thing on the womens tour. Really hope she can make her first 10K final here...if she does, will she make top 1000 ?
