Unusual for a 10K to have byes in the main draw !!! Does that mean Dani's guaranteed a ranking pt without having to play a match
This field is quite weak so a great chance for Dani or Emily to really cash in. Emily's rd1 draw is easy, opponent is 17 and ranked 1312 and has lost 10 of her last 11 matches, all pretty comprehensively !
I guess they're playing a series of tournaments in Mexico ? Good move if that's the case, fields will be a lot weaker and the clay won't suit the games of either particularly well. Emily's shown signs that she's getting back to somewhere near her best, had that win over an opponent ranked 320ish in February, when I watched her in Sutton there were glimpses of class especially at the net but she still looked quite rusty. She's been remodelling her forehand which is tough when you're competing week-in, week-out, she's always had a great first serve which is really effective when it goes in, I think she'd win a lot more matches if she could just get the percentage up a bit.
This sets up the all-British rd2 clash against Dani Brown They've played twice before and Emily won both matches; 6-4, 6-4 in a junior tournament back in 2001 and 6-4, 7-5 in the 2004 Bolton 10K.
It'll be an interesting clash of styles with Danielle very much a power merchant, big first serve and heavy, flat hitting from the baseline. In contrast Emily looks to mix things up with topspin and slice, she tries to work her opponents round the court and outmanouvere them, looking to attack the net frequently. My money's on Emily
I guess that Emily just outdid Dani for consistency, Dani can really self-destruct at times...she goes for so much on her serve and groundstrokes, it's not really a high percentage game plan ! Although Emily doesn't hit as hard she's a lot more consistent and works the points better.
Ruckert will be a tough opponent, she's ranked 510 and made two 10K semis earlier this month. She played Emily in Bath earlier this month, winning 6-4, 6-1 She also beat Jade Curtis 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at that tournament and in Jan she beat Fitzpatrick in 3 sets. Julia Bone did hammer her 6-3, 6-1 in March though.
