Danai Udomchoke spent his 20th birthday ranked 314 in the world. He spent his 21st birthday at 213 22nd at 179 23rd at 204 24th at 130 Just before his 25th birthday he finally broke the top 100 before falling out again and spending his 25th at 125 He is currently ranked at 95 and has a career high of 77
Barely had a sniff of top 150 before he turned 23.

Boggo! I was getting very nervous as I logged onto the drawsheet and the other 3 had all lost so limply!
As has been said first match back for Marray can be forgiven.
Jamie didn't just have a hard draw. He had the hardest in the tournament. Anyone who's followed challengers over the past couple of years knows Tsonga is probably the most dangerous player around at this level and would be higher (much higher) if he wasn't the altar ego of Injury Man. Remember vs Roddick at AO this year.
Boggo did well in the windy conditions in Valencia (USA) so I'm hoping for more here!
Marray and Baker have doubles to earn money this week!
Whilst I agree that it's wrong to suggest he won't crack top 100 I cannot see how you can argue that a lot of his results have been disappointing. Surely he himself would admit as much or what ambition does he have. Yes some of those ranked below him may get top 100 but so could he. If he has the ability to be top 100 then he should be disappointed to lose 2 & 3 to a player ranked 161 and i'm sure he will be.
On his 20th birthday, Max Mirnyi was ranked 287 21st: 256 22nd: 136 Broke into top 100 at 23. Is currently ranked 47 with a career high of 18.
Want any more examples of players not setting the world alight at 20 but going on to become very good top 100 players? Like jonnylad said, Tsonga was an absolutely shocking draw. From what I've seen he is easily capable of beating top 50 players and would give some top 20 players a good game as shown at AO.

Every loss is disappointing for a professional athlete in any sport. And it can be frustrating when a player you follow is out at the first hurdle a few weeks in a row, but it doesn't help anyone to overreact. In any tennis match, 2 guys go out there only one comes off still in the tourney. If Baker had beaten Tsonga, then surely that would mean Tsonga should be dreadfully disappointed at losing to a guy ranked 60 places lower?
I think sometimes we have to remember that our guy isn't the only one out on court. There is a menacing, determined, motivated and in this case extremely talented guy who wants to win just as much on the other side of the court.

John i'm sure you can find dozens more players who have broken into the top 100 in their mid 20's. I'll bet you'll also find 100's who haven't. It's all just stats. Maybe my initials comment was slightly harsh in hindsight but I feel unless these lads set and achieve the high standards then what is the point.
Too many of the challenger group, except Boggo, seem to be taking one step forward and 2 back at present. I know Jonny has been unlucky with the injury but it's just a tad frustrating that's all.
there's loads of examples like that, but then of course i'm sure there are many more examples of "promising" players who fade away. the trouble is, people don't remember these players as they don't make it!
It is a disappointing result from Jamie, but Tsonga is a quality quality player who, if he stays injury free, could be top 50, let alone top 100, by the end of the year! this is a player who beat ancic and moya a couple of years ago, prob before he was as developed as he is now (and before injuries), and he has broadly swept all before him this year!
Jamie has stepped up a level from futures to challengers. It takes time to adjust, maybe even a year to find his feet, and then i'm sure he'll start producing results consistently!
I'm not saying that because Mirnyi got into top 100 mid 20s then Jamie will. That would be bonkers, just pointing out that some players don't achieve their best until 22, 23, 24 etc.
Right now, there is no way of knowing whether Jamie will make top 100 because we don't have crystal balls. You can't expect him to go out there and beat a quality player just because he happnes to be playing him in the 1st round. Tsonga is a very good player, Jamie is not quite up to that standart yet. That's it. Simple. No more to see here. Doesn't mean that in a few years time he won't be up to that standard. As fans, we should stick by him and hope for the best.
