From the ATP rulebook:
D. entry Protection1) A player may petition the President for an Entry Protection when he is physically

injured and does not compete in any tennis event for a minimum period of six (6)

months. The written petitionmust be received within six (6)months after his last tournament.

2) The Entry Protection shall be a position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings

(Singles), as determined by the player's average South African Airways ATP Rankings

(Singles) position during the first three (3) months of his injury. The Entry Protection

shall be for entry into the main draw or qualifying competition or for special exempt

consideration. The Entry Protection shall not be used for seeding purposes or Lucky

Loser consideration.

3) The Entry Protection shall be in effect for either the first eight (8) Tournaments that

the player competes in using the Entry Protection (excluding Wild Cards and entries

as a Direct Acceptance with his current position in the ATP Ranking) or for the period

up to nine (9) months beginning with the first tennis event that the player competes

in, whichever occurs first.

He was injured in week commencing 5/3/07 when his position was 568, 3months later (11/6/07) it was 671, gives an average of 620.  If they use the 'week' before, actually 28/5/07, when his ranking 667, gives an average of 618.  Not sure exactly which they would apply, either way it'll be about 618-620.

Now that is one difficult question to answer, whatever the rules may say. Remember how Verkerk had a PR for over twelve or thirteen months?

See number 3 in my previous post - 8 tournaments or 9 months from his return, whichever is first.

Yes, I knew that. What I was saying was that it wasn't that in Verkerk's case.

Verkerk was injured in July 2004 and his attempt at return (Napoli Challenger) in March 2006 ended in his retirement, so I think that this tournament was deemed not to count as his first tournament back, as he was still injured.  His next attempt was September 2006 (Tarragona Challenger) when he was did not retire. It looks as if the 'clock' started from then.

Only doubt I have is that I haven't been able to work out where his protected ranking was used.
