Davis Cup Day 2 - Match Report

As Posted on britishtennis.net

Jamie Murray and Greg Rusedski won a tight 4 setter 6-1 3-6 6-3 7-6(5) against Wassen and Haase and now can look forward to Tuesday's draw in anticipation to see if they can draw a home tie for the September world group playoffs.

Team GB served first with Greg double faulting but that was the only blip in the first set and both he and Jamie ran through the set in double quick time and dished out a rare GB Davis Cup breadstick to the dutch. Haase held serve once but Wassen was so far of the pace of the match.

Wassen served first in the second set and he held to 15 and after Jamie had held again it was Greg who was broken to 30 to give the Dutch the one break they needed to take the set 6-3. Team GB failed to produce a break point in the last 7 games of the 2nd set.

The GB team seemed to protect Greg by always electing to start the sets with Murray serving. Jamie again held an opening service game but Jamie lost his only service game in the whole match in game 5 when Haase force the point and the Dutch then led 3-2. Then Jamie showed just why he is the GB number 1 doubles player with some wonderful volleys and they broke right back after several deuces in game 6. Jamie & Greg got the second break of the third set when it was Haase who lost his serve after some sloppy play and good pressure from Jamie.

Jamie had the chance then to serve for the set at 5-3 and raced to 40-0...then a slight wobble as the Dutch went for their shots and got it back to deuce.

Jamie and Greg stuck in and Greg hit the winner for the set.

The fourth set produced the best standard of play in the whole match with some great play from all 4 players. Two high-lights in the 4th set stand out...the first when facing Haase Jamie Murray produced the best pass of the day when he hit a forehand top-spin come drop shot completely wrong footing Wassen....Jamie looked to Brad Gilbert and shook his hand at him....Brad responded likewise...that stroke may have had its origins on the practice court with Gilbert in attendance...the second hi-light was slightly amusing...not for Wassen though who took a Rusedski second serve full in the privates...Im glad it was not a first serve !

From game 3 there were no break points to be had with the serve dominating the match. There were several love and 15 service games from both teams. Greg served at 5-6 down and held his nerve to take the match to a 4th set breaker.

Wassen served first and went long to hand a mini-break to the Brits. Jamie netted to hand it right back. GB got another mini-break at 3-1 and then seemed to be cruising to victory when 3 Murray volleys took it to 6-2 and 4 match and tie points !

6-2 became 6-5 with some fighting play from the Dutch but it was Greg when facing Haase who put away the winner and brought to the end a great performance from the team and a great career from Rusedski.
