Davis Cup: GB v Croatia

Lloyd's released the team. Henners (of course), Murray x2 (equally unsurprising) and the Baker boy (well deserved in my opinion, especially with Boggo injured).

I hear Ancic has just pulled out of the USO with a shoulder injury (we moan about Andy's troubles, how about poor Mario!). That should weaken the Croatian team a bit, unless he makes a superb recovery very fast.

Delighted to see Jamie B in the team.

that's good Count, thanks. Would Boggo be the reserve then? Or replace someone?

dont know how it will work imo, but lets face it boggo/baker will only play a dead rubber and only live if there is an injury.

I second both those sentiments, Madeline. Ancic must wonder who he's offended and Jamie B fully deserves this inclusion in the team.

What do people think of this comment on the LTA site?

Lloyd has resisted the urge to call up a British youngster as a hitting partner, believing none of the juniors have merited the honour with their performances this summer. Instead he has enlisted the services of the powerful South African Wesley Moodie who is part of the Monte Carlo-based squad formed by British coach Dave Sammel.

Cox won the Nationals without dropping a set, reached the semis of Roehampton and drew Alun Jones twice, who would probably beat Baker in straights and Henman in three.

But then little else should be expected from someone who dropped Mackin for doing well.

In any case, I am happy that no one has been chosen as then they would have to miss a Futures.

I suppose it makes sense, but not for the reason given. The Croats are all big hitters, so enlisting another big hitter rather than a junior who may be a bit lacking in power, is perhaps sensible.

I agree that makes sense but to say none of our juniors have merited a call up is a bit rich to put it mildly. I presume he's talking about the fact that none of them did especially well at Wimbledon but that was one tournament out of many.

Just spotted this in an Independent article:

''Alex Bogdanovic, the British No 3, and Richard Bloomfield, the No 5, will train with Lloyd's squad as they prepare for the tie. Lloyd said he would have named Bogdanovic as the fourth member of his team ahead of Baker but for an injury that forced him to retire three games into his first qualifying match in the US Open.

"Bogdanovic is unlucky," Lloyd said. "He's had this wretched rib and back injury and hasn't won a match since then. He's been basically playing at 80 per cent most of the time and it looks like he might have to have a couple of weeks off. He's in the six, but I'm not going to name him for obvious reasons. He may not even be fit to play anyway. I spoke to him and he understands that."

I'm strangely confident for this one, Murray has too much in his locker for one-dimensional players like Ljubo and Karlovic if he's fully fit (I always find he struggles against fellow shot makers like Baghdatis, Djoko or Gasquet rather than the big hitters), and Henman is capable of pulling off at least one win against either of those two if this is his last game, he's going to be that hungry. Glad Baker has been picked, he's plugging away well and did well at the USOQ. Hope Boggo takes a rest and gets his back better and can push for top 100 next year.

I agree. Andy should have enough to win both the singles rubbers and surely we will win another match out of the other three? So due to the format of the Davis Cup, we could easily beat a far superior Crotian team!

The format is ridiculous in my opinion. It's not country vs. country, like it should be, but player vs. country. Someone exceptional like Federer could single handedly beat the Spanish team, even though they are ten times stronger than the Swiss one. The four singles rubbers should be played by four different players...

We would be screwed if that happened.
