Davis Cup: GB v Croatia

The draw for the world group play offs takes place at the ITF offices in London on Tuesday.

The teams that are already through to the 16 team draw are :

The 8 world group 1st round loosers :

Chile, Romania, Croatia, Australia, Czech Rep, Switzerland, Belarus and Austria.

Winners of the 4 group 1 2nd round ties :

Great Britain, Serbia, Israel and Slovka Rep. (All are 3-0 up)

Winners of the 2 Americas group 1 2nd round ties :

Brazil or Canada / Mexico or Peru

Winners of the 2 Asia / Ocenania group 1 2nd round ties :

Japan and the Korean Rep. (Both are 3-0 up)

There will be 8 seeds. 7 of the World group loosers will take 1 with 1 other team seeded. Very unlikely to be GBR...more than likely to be either the Slovak Rep, Mexico, Korea or Brazil. Depends on how the points fall off and are added.

So team GB will face one of the following teams :

Chile, Romania, Croatia, Australia, Czech Rep, Switzerland, Belarus, Austria and one from Slovak Rep, Mexico, Korea or Brazil.

I'd take Australia at home with this team!

I remember checking on Chile some while ago and think we would be away (apparently we played them at home a long time ago). Ditto I think for Romania (I remember losing at home to Romania with Jeremy Bates playing in the early 90s, and don't think we have drawn them since). Czech Republic would be at home (we lost with Tim + Jamie Delgado away a few years ago). Belarus and Croatia would be drawn by lot.

Full list:

Chile - Away
Romania -  Away
Croatia -  Drawn by lot
Australia -  Home
Czech Rep - Home
Switzerland - Home
Belarus - Drawn by lot
Austria - Home
Slovak Rep - Home
Mexico - Home
Korea - Drawn by lot
Brazil - Away

Best draws mexico at home you reckon? That's if they go into the draw. Of the ones there already, I'd fancy our chances against any of them. I think a home tie with Slovak Republic would go down nicely although none of the games are particularly easy.

hmm, belarus should be ok, hey must be a it of a 1 man team do they have a dubs specialist?

mexico would probably be the easiest.

to avoid, swizterland i think would be tough, chile away, croata.

so in the WG play-offs there are no zonal groups?

Belarus away from home will be far from okay as Voltchkov is a great doubles player.

I'll be thought of as a lunatic when I say this (and rightly so), but I want us to play on clay if we draw Australia.

Both Andy and Tim will have a good chance on the dirt against Hewitt. Even Morgan will beat Guccione...

But most probably we will go for grass and make life really difficult for ourselves.

By the way, are there clay courts in Britain which are good enough to host a DC tie?

Yes, they can surely build a few. It's ages away!

And Bournemouth used to host ties in the past.

Wembley will be good and I'm sure that it's possible. But I don't think that we can have it for a few months because of its commitment to footie.

I thought that you were asking if they have a good doubles player other than Mirnyi!

oh i see max is word no1 dubs

still andy could win 2 singles. then our number 2 would need to beat their number 2. who is ranked 842!

voltckov - has he been injured? singles 1222, dubs 1074.

He may have suffered a minor injury or two, but his ranking isn't so low because of that. He has just... faded away.

But he is a different self at DC, very much like the one who reached the last four at Wimbly. Beat both Robredo and Ferrer in Belarus last year!
