I find myself expecting her to beat these opponents too which just shows how incredible her rise has been...even with Bally or Anne at their best, I'd usually only think it was 50-50 when they were up against top 150 opposition but Naomi seems to just be regularly outplaying opponents of this quality.
Naomi was telling me how the taxes on prize money in the USA is crazy, you need to win the tournament or at least make the final, to come away with some sort of profit ! In Florida it's a whopping 47% which is a bit much tbh ! She got more dosh from her 10K win in India back in 2005 than she did for winning Orange last month.
Naomi didn't know exactly how much tax it was till after the tourney so she was quite taken aback when during the post-final presentation ceremony they presented her with a big 3K cheque then quickly replaced it with a 1.7K one !!!!
Sheddie, I find this shocking. Have her talk to a CPA and hopefully next year she can fill out forms and have it refunded. What is amazing is that income tax over here is so much lower than in Europe. We pay only about 15% on our salary and have no sales tax in Montana. In Florida I thought the system was the other way around. I thought their sales tax was high and income tax really low unless you earned a great salary.......maybe they know something that we don't and Naomi is gonna win the US Open later in the year so she needs that high tax bracket....but seriously I read that and was shocked.
47% over here? Someone is make a mistake or she will get a hefty refund next year. Make sure she talks to someone esp a CPA....I know a great CPA if she needs help.
Sorry that this is a bit late...but my computer access has been v limited today...this is what Naomi told me about her rd2 win, thought u might be interested to read:
"I was really looking forward to my match today as I was taking on the top seed, Zahlovova, ranked 140. I knew it was going to be a completely different match to any of the others I had played on the clay as she is ranked much higher, and has more of a hard court game. All of my previous opponents from this week and last week, were very consistent and had games well suited to the clay. I was prepared for her to slap some winners and make some mistakes so I knew I had to concentrate on playing a smart clay court game and be patient to get the errors from her.
One thing that I have been working on in practise with Jeremy is taking on the second serve to give myself the advantage. I have been working on trying to find the right balance and not looking to hit a winner off every second serve but still taking control of the point. He noticed that I was often missing oppertunities to dominate the points and put them under pressure. Focusing on this helped me to break her twice in the first set which was crucial as I was trailing 2-4.
After taking the set 6-4 I was looking for a good start in the second but lost my focus for a couple of points in the first game and found myself a break down. I got the break back to level up at 2-2 and then really hit my stride. I really started to construct the points well using my angles, backhand slice, dropshots and kick serve which are all parts of my game I have been working hard on in the last few months.
Overall I was happy with my performance but there are alot of areas I need to improve for tomorrows match. I am really looking forward to the quarter final as Jozami is a very solid, smart clay courter and it will be a tough test. The weather has been warmer and the courts aren't as heavy so hopefully I can use the conditions to my advantage."
Evidently she was unable to use the conditions to her advantage, looks like it was a really tight one. I must admit I thought Naomi would win comfortably but then again she's still only 17, can't expect her to produce these brilliant results day in, day out.
Jozami is 18 and a fast improving player too, ranked 244 and she made a 75K quarter-final earlier this year, beating two top 130 players in Arvidsson and Fedossova. She did lose 7-6, 6-2 to Sarah B though.
Still it's been another great couple of weeks for her, some super wins on the clay over opponents ranked quite a bit higher. Has sent out quite a strong message to Nigel Sears regarding next week's Fed Cup ties ! He has to pick her in the singles now for sure ! What do we think, should she be no 1 or no 2 ?
We also have to remember that clay is by no means her best surface, she's still very inexperienced on it, just played juniors on the clay last year and 25Ks are a massive step up from that ! It required her to adapt her game quite a bit and play in a different style, takes a while to find how best to play to your strengths and weaknesses on it ! It took Henman about 7 years before he started getting any kind of success on clay.
I must admit I thought Naomi would win comfortably
I thought she was only a slight favourite so it's not really surprising she lost a tight one. As you say Jozami is a fast improving player, and Sarah didn't play her on Clay.
As for playing her as 1 or 2...as much as I'd love her to get experience against the big guns, if we try and have our cake and eat it too we could end up getting beaten 3-0 against most teams. It's smarter to use the same tactic as last year and have her face the weaker #2 and rely on Bally/Claire to take the doubles.

True, I guess that while the top seed who she faced in rd2 was more of a hard-court player, Jozami is an out and out clay specialist. I think Naomi was disappointed as the draw had opened up but she feels it's been another good week for her.
Yeah, that's true. She's not going to beat the likes of Jankovic (....yet ).. going to be more of a banker to get the points against the weaker players than Anne so best to use Anne as the "sacrificial lamb"
