Murray doubt for Davis Cup tie

This may have been posted on here somewhere but I cant see it, -

Great Britain Davis Cup captain John Lloyd has admitted Andy Murray is an injury doubt for next weekend's Euro-Africa zone quarter-final clash with Holland.

The 19-year-old Scot was convincingly beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open and looks set to remain just on the cusp of the top 10 in the next week's ATP rankings.

Lloyd, who will be able to call upon the returning Tim Henman for the tie, said the injury - thought to be a groin problem - has left Murray's participation in doubt: "We don't yet know the full extent of Andy's injury but I believe he was injured in training on Thursday.
"I just felt there was something wrong with Andy - it's hard for me to think he could lose 6-1 6-0 to anyone if he was fit. We must now wait for Andy to join the squad this week when we can assess his condition.

Lloyd added: "Clearly we want Andy to be in the team against the Netherlands but we are not panic-stricken."

I'm pretty sure he'll play. If the strain was so bad he wouldn't have played on Friday.

I wish John Lloyd hadn't said anything. Andy didn't say anything about the injury for a reason and Lloyd saying that has pretty much tarred Andy with the injury brush again.

'I just felt'

thats what JL said in opening statement. nothing cnclusive, just making excuses for the loss.

yeah he was 100% against the Ukraines. He just wanted to leave on Saturday afternoon to get to the next tournament, and then couldn't

I hope it is just playing the injury up a bit, but i also hope he doesn't play when he shouldn't. He does always seem to be injured when he's supposed to play on British soil doesn't he

I didn't think he sounded too pessimistic to be honest. It was more cautionary. He was pretty positive about the doubles (even if he couldn't pick between Tim and Jamie ) and sounded in pretty good spirits. It also showed you a picture of him working with some kids on Sky and he was laughing and smiling so I don't think it's that bad. Probably just cautionary where he doesn't want to say anything either way in case something happens between now and Friday.

It was a very good interview. He spoke about how he asked Brad if he wanted him to stop shouting at him in his matches but Brad has told him to keep doing it. He also passed his theory test. He sounded pretty happy for the most part.

He doesnt sound too positive today (Monday)!

BBC:
British number one Andy Murray could miss this week's Davis Cup tie with the Netherlands because of a groin injury.
"My groin is not too good," the 19-year-old, who has moved up to a career-high 11 in the world rankings, told Five Live.

"The inflammation in my hip bone is not too bad but I tried practising yesterday and didn't feel good at all.

"I'll have to see what it's like on Wednesday - if it's not good, there is a good chance I won't be able to play."

regardless of how bad the injury really is (and I guess we won't know until he decides whether to play or not) I think he's being cautionary and has learnt from last time he was injured for the Davis Cup in Scotland when he left it till the last minute to pull out and disappointed lots of people (I'm not trying to critise him at all just stating the facts). By saying on the Monday before that he may not play and then making a final decision on Thursday morning he is giving people enough time to get used to the idea that they might not see our number 1 play and to build up the enthusiasm to support our team anyway in a way that didn't quite happen last time.

While I am hopeful he can play Davis Cup and we can have a good tie, I am more concerned that he protects any injury and allows him to get better so he's fully fit for the clay.

This Davis Cup tie is of course important but I am less concerned about it because I still feel that until we have a sounder younger base for the team besides Andy and now Jamie, it will do us no good to get back into the World Group anyway. This is very likely to be Greg's last appearance for us in Davis Cup and I don't think we should put too much pressure on Tim's shoulders as he reaches the twilight of his own career.

However we do this weekend in Davis Cup, Andy must ensure he is fit enough to take advantage of the opportunities he has to make big strides throughout April and May.

to be hionest Imo the majority of people that go to davis cup still want to watch tim play. he is still their number 1. i went to the eastbourne tie and i heard so many dissaponited people that neither tim nor greg were playing, and probbably 50% of them ha dno idea who boggo was. now ok al isnt famous, but if you claim to have interest in british tennis and go to the DC etc then surely your knowldge should extend.

this reminds of, when i was watching the miami, and it was one of the youngers player matches (maybe djoko) and the the commentator siad something like: 'with a a lot of the crowd who woulsnt have heard of this young gun' and i'm thinking jesus he top 20 fgs. i thought the problem was only wimbledon related, but i think its a universal tennis problem. people go the these )quiet expenive) events cause it good to say you have been, not cuarse mnay of them have an overwhleming interest or understanding of the sport.

rant over

I know what you mean, Count - and it irritates the hell out me that I have to plan a trip to Wimbledon like a military operation because it's so popular with people who don't believe tennis exists for the other 11 months of the year.

*sigh* anyway - it is what it is.

Still - dumb to go to a Davis Cup tie without the first idea of who is playing before you go.

Yeah although he did sound quite cheerful about things in general like doubles and his driving theory test ( ! )  I must admit I too really thought from above that it could be bad news re his Davis Cup participation.

I was also very disturbed that when he was asked about last 2 semis when he seemed to play injured, he basically seemed to admit that he was carrying  an injury at Miami as well as known problems in Indian Wells.

But he said that he felt that he really needed to give these matches a go since if he'd won either he'd have been into the World Top 10, which was a big ambition.

I'm sorry but I found that unbelievable short-term thinking.  Sure,  we all want him to get into the top 10 but not at the danger of his longer term fitness.

Anyway, if he can even just win 2 or 3 matches ( and hopefully he will win more ) through the clay court master series events and the French Open, he should walk into the top 10.  He is so close just now and is defending precisely one win over the 4 tournaments.

What would be much more of a problem is if he aggravated any existing injuries and missed out on the clay court season or even Wimbledon.

If he is still bothered about injuries later in the week I would prefer he didn't play Davis Cup and protected any injuries.  I'm no medical expert but I think he maybe runs a risk of picking up compensatory injuries while protecting an existing problem.  It is just a slight problem that he might end up looking like he chooses Davis Cup to miss when he should actually also have pulled out of a least one of his individual Master Series semis, but it may at the end of the day be the sensible decision.

Andy will get into the top 10.  To give that as the main reason for playing these semis was as I say very disturbing.

Anyway, hope he makes top 10 next week without even playing, with Haas having points to defend then maybe he will relax a bit on that front.

It's actually ironic that I was nearly going to post when folk were saying he was so unlucky to be still outside top 10 with over 2000 points that maybe that very fact would help drive him on more and hence increase his points score above what it would otherwise have been, given he so much wanted to be in top 10.  But actually, maybe he wanted it too much.

He has such a long and hopefully very successful career ahead, I think maybe he and his advisors need sometimes to consider the bigger picture.
