Goldstein on Canas

Very interesting. Suggests bad vibes, distrust and jealousy from player towards Canas because of his positive test. Worth a read:

Goldstein: Nonetheless, his return to glory has been met with a fair amount of skepticism by his colleagues for several reasons. First and foremost, he has already tested positive once. Secondly, his style of play would lend itself to the benefits of performance-enhancing drugs. The guy runs ALL DAY. He must have covered eight miles of territory in his match with Federer and he was chasing down balls in the third-set tiebreaker with the same vigor as in the first set. Finally, he hails from a country that has produced an alarming number of positive tests at the elite level.

i am not suprised that there is distrust to be honest. whne you see how fit some of the players are it does make you wonder.

Whether or not you think Canas was guilty of cheating originally - and personally, having read all the details I can get hold of, I don't think he was guilty of anything but wrongly trusting tournament staff to deliver the medicine he was prescribed - I would have thought that if anybody could be GUARANTEED to be clean at the moment, it would be him.

Surely nobody would be stupid enough to risk being caught after beating Fed once, let alone twice. The testing is random ( but I bet the testers can slip in a test on an individual if they are suspicious of him).

Anyway the substance he tested positive for was not performance-enhancing, it was a diuretic which CAN mask positive results of other drugs. That does not mean that other drugs were there to be masked.
