AMS Shanghai!

Shanghai Confirmed as ATP Masters Series Event from 2009

The ATP Board today approved Shanghai as the host of the ATP’s Asian Masters Series tournament, starting in 2009.

Shanghai has hosted the men’s season-ending Tennis Masters Cup on three occasions. The first was in 2002 and it has since held the event in 2005 and 2006 and will continue to stage the tournament in China for the next two years.

“We are delighted to confirm that the ATP will expand its relationship with the city, its tennis fans and our partners in Shanghai in their world class tennis facility and stadium,” said ATP Executive Chairman and President Etienne de Villiers. “China is a major growth market for tennis and it is vital for the sport to have premium events in its major cities, ideally on a continuing basis. With the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour announcing a top event in Beijing we have now given the sport of tennis in China the chance to develop and evolve over time and options to allow existing and new tennis fans to savor the joys of our great sport at the highest level.”

Tennis Masters Cup Tournament Director and ATP CEO International, Brad Drewett said the tournament had played a significant role in the development and popularity of the game in not only Shanghai, but also China as a whole.

“It is a natural progression for Shanghai to become an ATP Masters Series Tournament,” Drewett said. “Shanghai has the infrastructure and expertise as well as huge public support to stage one of the ATP’s eight biggest events.”

“The Shanghai Administration of Sport and Shanghai Ba-shi have been dedicated partners for the Masters Cup and have invested tremendous resources to grow tennis in Shanghai. This support for the ATP and passion to grow the sport of tennis in China will continue to strengthen with an annual ATP Masters Series tournament,” he said.

I suppose it makes sense seeing as it's hosted the end of year event, but where will it get put in the calendar?

The calendar will get restructured in a major way in the next two years and at least one of the clay Masters will be chopped for sure. Also, one of Cincy, Canada, Paris and Madrid is going down by the look of it - Shanghai should fit somewhere over there.

Madrid may be played on clay in the future and will be scheduled before Roland Garros.

I've always found it odd Paris has both a AMS and a Grand slam. If a europe one should go, it should be that one. That said, out of self interest would way prefer a clay event dropped.

I'm sure the Spanish would be very happy to have Madrid turned into a clay event. Always found it strange that the one country you would associate with players who love slow courts had a masters series event indoors.

I reckon they should introduce an indoors grand slam. Do away with one of the outdoor hard court slams. US Open is too good to lose but Aussie Open is not imo. Lose the Aussie or make them produce an indoor venue. Can't see it happening but that's my personal view.

Apparently, the clay courters are in open revolt led by Rafa Nadal over the possibility of a clay court event being taken off the calendar. Can't see how they can complain really. They have 3 events and also as we have seen this year Indian Wells and Miami are far more suited to clay courters than grass courters and players who like fast courts. In fact, the whole tour has had a general slowing down of courts imo. Wimbly is a lot slower than in the past and hard courts have generally got slower, hence the serious lack of serve volleyers at the top of the game.

I think this came about due to the complaints that were about due to how the game was becoming an ace-athon in most encounters. Still, would be nice to have a level playing field so players with all different strengths can prosper on different surfaces. It seems that these days 3/4s of tournaments are played on a middle ground of slow hard courts which suit no one in particular.

wasnt it monte carlo to going to be dropped?

In america which one should go? cincinati? cant see then dropping IW/Miami.

harsh to lose hamburg, as germnany only big event isn't it? same with spain, its strange to have indoors, but better than another slowy. possibly lose paris, i guess shanhgi will be providing a indoor event. and if (when?) london gets the YEC i cant see a grass master appearing or queens being upgraded to masters, althoigh would be nice if queens were bumped slighty, although i guess you would need to go the same with halle.

So if i understand correctly it is:

1) Indian Wells/Hard
2) Miami/Hard
3) Monte Carlo/ Clay
4) Rome/Clay
5) Hamburg/Clay
6) Montreal/Hard
7) Cincinatti//Hard
8) Madrid/Indoor
9) Paris/Indoor
