Naomi's new ranking of 280ish won't go on until Monday, too late for the qualies. I think she'd have missed out on a seeding by a couple of places anyway.
Spoke to her last night, she's now feeling quite a bit better and looking forward to competing on the clay, has been for some time. Karen's over there too. Naomi says it's going to be an interesting few weeks as how well she, Anne and Bally do, will probably determine who gets chosen for the 2 singles places on the Fed Cup team.
Speaking afterwards Naomi said "The clay is great, I've been looking forward to it for a while. It's fairly quick American clay but today it rained a lot and they added an extra dressing which really slowed it down. However, the red clay in Europe will probably be about the same pace so I'm glad to get the practise. I'm excited about my new style of play on clay, it makes the surface transition that much easier as I am focusing on patience and movement."
"In the match today it rained and play was suspended when I was match point up !!!!"
She's been working a lot on constructing the rallies more and so competing on clay for the next 2 months will really help a lot with that
Unfortunately Karen Paterson lost 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. That was a poor result as her opponent was American Alexandra Podkolzina who's ranked about 300 places lower in the mid 700s, her only result of note for some time was making the quarters of a 10K in Mexico earlier this month
QR2 (final qualies round): N Cavaday v A Bachmann (Ger)(2)
The veteran German is currently ranked 230 but was as high as 130 back in 2000. Bachmann has had some really good results in US challengers so far in 2007, reaching the semis of a 50K in Hawaii and the quarters of a 50K in Midland where she impressively defeated former world no 60 Antonella Serra-Zanetti.
QR2: N Cavaday (GB) bt A Bachmann (Ger)(2) 6-3, 6-1
Another brilliant win for Naomi, outclassing yet another top 250 player, the transformation this new game style has caused is amazing !
Naomi said "Bachmann was very aggressive and hits flat off both sides. She has a good serve with a lot of kick and a good return. She's a very patchy player though, hits some great shots but I played a very smart clay-court game which was still aggressive and caused her a lot of problems. It's been raining a lot over here, there was a rain delay at 5-2 in the first set. On the clay I've found that the most effective serve for me is the kick serve to the deuce court, it really opens up the court for me to get on top of the point."
"I now play Kosinka the Polish girl. She's been playing a lot of these 25Ks and has qualified consistently but is yet to make an impact on the main draws."
Naomi's also in the doubles qualies with Canada's Valerie Tetreault.
