The problem, as most of you know, is that the squad needs to be cut to 4 before the tie begins. If they were allowed 5 or 6 players I'm sure Aucks would be in the squad.
If either Andy or Tim were injured in the singles, they might have forfeited the singles match, the doubles match isn't a gimme and no disrespect but neither Jamie M or Aucks would win a singles match if they were pressed into service. So by playing 2 doubles specialists, an injury would almost certainly mean defeat.
Andy, Tim and Greg would all have a chance of a positive result in doubles as well as both singles rubbers.
I think Aucks would need to either get back to British number 1 in doubles or get his singles ranking up near 200 to get back in the squad.
Because Jamie is British number 1 in doubles just now. For Aucks to get into the squad as a 2nd doubles player he would also have to cover the singles players in the event of injury.
(If Aucks were to go on a good run in doubles and take over as British number 1, then theoretically Jamie would have to either get back ahead of Aucks or get his singles ranking up to get a place in the squad if all was fair)
But with their serves, both Bryan brothers at least have a chance in a singles match.
Bob actually beat top 100 player Lukas Dlouhy in a dead rubber last month, and last year took top 50 player Fernando Verdasco to 3 sets in his only match.
Neither Aucks or Jamie are at a stage where they could even dream about beating a top 100 player in singles.
And the Bryans are almost guaranteed a point in doubles unlike a fledgling pair like Stretch and Aucks who would probably be less than 50/50.

But of course silly things like facts shouldn't be involved in Davis Cup discussions.
I totally agree !
My point I was trying to make is that Aucks is a great doubles player and if he was younger he would still be playing singles....he decided to concentrate on doubles..hoping to play DC in the future....he has not been treated well.
Great to see Baker included. Unfortunately when the squad is chopped down to 4, he will likely be discarded.
Looking ahead to next year, and maybe even later this year, I think you will see Baker playing live singles matches once Tim and Greg are gone

Auckland should not be there. There is no space for another doubles specialist in the team.
Good news Evans is there.....

Have to disagree totally on that.....the mans told to get into the top 100 and he will make the DC tie to play....he does that...and is not played.....continues to improve....this time not even in the squad.....if we have two top doubles specialists play them.....they both like the ad court but Jamie told me to my face he could play with James and would like to play with him sometime...so sorry Johnny....your wrong IMO.
glad its a free country
You make a good point and I have to admit to not having the first hand knowledge you picked up in Aberdeen but I still disagree. When the squad is shaved to 4 for the tie there is no place for Aucks AND Jamie M, and on this occasion Jamie M deserves it more
According to today's Independent Tim, Greg, Andy M and Jamie M will be the final four-man squad. I don't know whether this is official or if they are jumping to conclusions.

I hope Jamie B (or anyone else for that matter) has stepped up to the main ATP tour by then, or else we'll have Andy plus a couple of guys whose standard is somewhere between futures and challengers. .. so get a move on Morgan Phillips, your country may need you!

I also get your point...if there was to be choice between them at the mo then obviously Jamie should play...it just should not come to that.
